'A killing field' -- 50th Flint homicide sparks more fear, pleas for help
Flint Journal ^ | 9-30-2010 | David Harris

FLINT, Michigan — Fifty homicides in less than nine months, a chilling milestone for the city of Flint.

“It scares me,” said resident Cathy Layne, 49, who lives near where the body of the 50th homicide victim was found in a vacant home last week. “It scares me to walk to the store, because I might get jumped and end up in an abandoned home like that kid.”

Police announced Wednesday that the body found Sept. 23 in an abandoned home on Garland Street near 10th Avenue had been ruled a homicide, making it the 50th of the year.

The city’s streets have seen the equivalent of about one homicide every five days.

...................

In a city of just more than 100,000, Flint has a homicide rate of almost five times more than the national rate. For every 100,000 residents, there have been nearly 45 deaths — the 2009 national average is 9.4.

Former State Rep. Vera Rison, who in May called for the National Guard to come in, said she’s still trying to get guardsmen to come to Flint. She said things are getting worse as the year goes on.

She called on city and state leaders to do more to fight the crime.

“We don’t have a lot of time,” Rison said. “We need to come up with something to do and bring in people to help. We’ve got people with guns better than the police carry. We need to let our authorities know that this isn’t acceptable.”

Flint is one of the bluest cities in the state.

Five of those are from a serial killer, but take those out, and you still have 45 homicides. The population of Flint is estimated at only 105,000 people.

It’s the serious disregard of the rule of law.
Flint, like Detroit, coming soon to a city near you.

Hey, I know! Ban guns!

That will surely solve EVERYTHING!

...oh... wait.

Never mind.

I grew up in Fenton, a small town 15mi south of Flint. It used to be a nice place but now...yikes. I have family still in the area and a sister who works as a RN in a Flint hospital. She has had some scary moments goint to and from her car in the hospital parking lot. She recently bought a handgun and has a permit to carry.

Did Flint have all of these crime problems when the population was largely white? Is our nation ever going to address the serious problem of black crime? Are blacks ever going to be required to pay reparations for what they have done to our once-gleaming cities?

The problems of Detroit have bled up into Flint.

Flint was a great place to grow up. It was a cultural and educational center.

Somewhere in the 70s, it began to slide into the pit. Most of my family has left and live out of state, including myself.

Koegel hot dogs and Halo burgers are still the best.

Lay the blame where it belongs, at the feet of the Democrats, LBJ and his great society welfare that made black fathers irrelevant, and destroyed the black family.

No legal handgun ban in Flint. Municipalities are expressly forbidden from making their own gun laws in Michigan.

No. Flint was a safe place to live with a generous middle class. Most of the cops had bachelor degrees. A kid could ride a bike anywhere and stay gone all day. White flight began in the late 60s. Until then the worst part of town was North Saginaw Street.

Geesh, sounds like my hometown of Baltimore. Wonderful place to live until the blacks took over. Now, it is an open cesspool. Makes you feel like crying. Wonder why so many black people feel like they have to destroy everything in sight? Maybe Obama can tell us, since he seems to exemplify that trait.

I wouldn’t say I love to beat up on them. Maybe like to beat up on them, but love is a bit strong. I’ve only made one negative comment about them — that by and large I consider them fairly useless. If I am not mistaken, you countered that 500 of them were great folks. And I accept that. In fact, make that 502. I used to work with a Canadian girl who was a pretty good sort (trying to escape there to become a US citizen). And, I’m sure the guy who invented Canadian bacon was okay.

Fifty homicides in less than nine months,
It wouldn't be so bad, but there are only sixty or so people left now. Seriously, the population of Flint has dropped by at least half since 1980, maybe even 1990. The highways were packed with cars twenty years ago, now one can almost use them as bowling alleys. Grand Rapids and Flint vied for Michigan's second city, and now it is no contest. Thanks Darren McCarty.

Read up on how Canada has helped the US. Start with the Canadian Navy in WWII... the third largest on Earth. Then proceed to the Avro Arrow, the most sophisticated aircraft on Earth, that could even function as a spacecraft, killed by the US. Then...the "Canadian Caper" of 1979 which saved several US embassy officials in Iran. Finally, 9/11, when thousands of Americans were welcomed into Canadian homes.

Learn some respect.

~~~
This goes on all over the country,,,
Has been for years,,,
NOLA had the Guard in that 9th ward area for a long time,,,
Most of this is black on black crime,,,
I don’t hold out much hope that any of this will change...
