The San Francisco 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, according to a league source.
The team announced the firing Monday, one day after it fell to 0-3 and was beaten 31-10 at Kansas City. San Francisco has scored 38 points, second fewest in the NFL behind Carolina.
Mike Johnson will move from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator. Offensive assistant Jason Michael will take over as quarterbacks coach.
49ers coach Mike Singletary and Raye have not seen eye-to-eye about the reasons for the team's struggling offense.
The 49ers were considered a favorite in the NFC West this year, but their offense has stalled, plagued by turnovers and a weak running game. The team passed on several quarterbacks to stay with starter Alex Smith, who has been inconsistent during the team's three losses.
Raye, who came under fire following the 49ers' 31-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, took responsibility for the team's problems on offense.
The 49ers showed progress in a 25-22 Monday night loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 20, but Sunday's one-sided loss to the Chiefs put the focus back on Raye.
Johnson, who was in his second season as quarterback coach, served as the Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach from 2006 to 2007, and as the Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach for three years, where he worked with Michael Vick.

As the rumor mill churns....it looks like the Giants and Panthers will be fighting for the services of Bill Cowher for next season. Heck, right now I'd take Rich Kotite...Wayne Fontes...maybe even take George Seifert back! Fox has lost the team!

But they were undefeated in preseason - no?
See, that's the thing about the preseason -- it doesn't mean anything. Your opponents aren't necessarily trying to win. Smart coaches avoid injuries to their starters and merely use preseason games to evaluate 2nd and 3rd string talent to decide who to cut from the team.

The rumors about Cowher and the Giants have been making their way around sports radio here in the NYC area for the last two years. Every time Cowher takes himself out of consideration for another NFL job, there is growing speculation that he already has his eye on one specific coaching job -- and the NY Giants are one of those mentioned prominently.
I can't imagine him coaching for any organization unless he was given a free reign to implement his own "AFC Central" style of team -- which is pretty much the same as the old Bill Parcells model.

It still burns my butt that when given the chance ex-coach Nolan chose Alex Smith instead of Aaron Rogers. Now Nolan is long gone and we’re stuck with his idiot decision.
