Today's Jacksonians
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW ^ | SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 | Salena Zito

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio

The landscape along the old Lincoln Highway to this "pottery capital" maintains mountain vistas as the Ohio River curls through Columbiana County's hills and hollows.

A museum is dedicated to the area's once-robust ceramic plants. The 300 factories of old are down to one that produces popular, colorful Fiestaware.

"We are pretty much devastated," says Mayor James Swoger of his town's economy and general condition.

He describes East Liverpool as a Democrat stronghold: "I am a Democrat but largely because I was born a Democrat. It was passed down by my father."

The two-term mayor doesn't like what Democrats have done with their majority in Washington. "Plain and simple, we are left out."

"The Washington Democratic narrative is that the populists are a bunch of hate-filled, ignorant yahoos clinging to their God and guns in tough times."

They've been given a wake-up call, but will they listen?

Interesting. Maybe by 2012 there will be a Jacksonian group of democrats running to take out the progressive trash in primaries.

Oh how I do agree.

We hear lately about the disaffected, who IMHO will still vote for the failed programs and parties that began long ago with the “affordable housing system” that led to the financial meltdown that led to the present malaise. Hope and change is a myth sold to those who wouldn’t know what they want from government, they just know they want something as long as it has dollar signs in front of it, and while government is at it how about punishing the rich, which is everyone making more than minimum wage.

"I am a Democrat but largely because I was born a Democrat. It was passed down by my father."

That's a terrible excuse, my father and mother were both democrat teacher's union members. I USED to be a democrat because I didn't have a clue or a care.

They're not democrats anymore either.

The numbers sure seem to bear that out.I hope they can dig their way out of the hole the rats dug for them.Oh course the voters supplied the shovel.

Today, Jacksonian elements are found in the dissatisfaction of blue-collar Democrats and the disenchantment of independents; both believed they voted for change in 2008.

Oh, puh-leeze. Anybody who couldn't see exactly what and who Obama is during his campaign, shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a ballot. What do they think their party has been doing for the last 30 years, for that matter?

If they are truly in favor of smarter, more responsible, accountable government than they have seen from the Obama administration, then they'd best get SMALLER GOVERNMENT into their heads.
