As the United Nations General Assembly convenes for their annual session in New York, much of the attention has focused on Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his declarations that capitalism is near death while the "future" belongs to his country.
Four years ago it was Venezuela's Hugo Chavez who captured the headlines with a theatrical rant referring to an appearance made by President George W. Bush as, "the devil came here yesterday, and it smells of sulfur still today."
How did such a respectable international governmental organization, one that fought a bloody war including 16-member states which beat back a Communist invasion of South Korea from 1950-1953, come to symbolize little more than a leftist think tank embracing a platform for anti-Western rhetoric?
Though the answer is complex, much of it stems from the egalitarian desire to give all heads of state an equal voice in world affairs. While a noble endeavor, the end result has been to erode a once formidable organization and champion of protecting sovereign nations into an increasingly marginalized, and at times radicalized, entity.
In a sign of the UN's new world order, Fidel Castro's Cuba and Mohammar Khadafi's Libya have a seat on its Human Rights Council. Resolutions condemning Israel have become pro forma, notably with 22 coming in the 61st General Assembly (2006-2007), during a time in which none were passed against the genocide in Sudan's Darfur.
Although the United States has not held much sway in UN affairs for some time due to routine vetoes from Russia and/or China, as well as other factorsdespite providing a home for the organization and roughly 25% of the funding, things actually have gotten worse under the Obama Administration.

I do long for the good old days, when the UN was merely a platform for Soviet espionage.
Was it every anything BUT that?

I musta missed something.
As far back as I can remember, even into the 1950s, the UN was a leftist think tank embracing a platform for anti-western rhetoric.
Maybe they’re a little more brazen about it now, but that’s what they always were.
Nope. It was founded by International Socialists to advance the cause of International Socialism.

...former ambassador Bolton says that opening day at the UN is like the bar scene in Starwars.
Padlock the doors and cut off the funds. They will all go home to their turd world paradises.
The UN was founded on failed principles of the idea that the “civilized nations” trusted each other, were willing to pursue a common goal, and were also the ones who knew best.
Woodrow Wilson’s 14 points outlines the whole idea that they tried unsuccessfully with the League of Nations, and was crudely regurgitated with the United Nations.
The problem here was that in this all-inclusive net, we opened the doors of the UN for sheer communist influence from the start, especially with the Security Council and the voting system.
The UN was based on trust, trust that was not deserved nor wise from the get-go.
Hillary Clinton claims- the United Nations is the single most important global institution.
Exactly the dialogue that makes me wonder what Obama was even thinking when he chose her to be Secretary of State.
C’mon Hillary. Lets put things in perspective.
Two years ago, African leaders voted moaman ghadaffi as “king of kings”. Moamarr has the support of 83 muslim based tyrants in Africa and can vote for them at the UN. Add in the mideast, and the east and then majority are the same.....tyrants and theocracies...., now you most definitely have the majority of the UN.... all anti Western civilization.
They want to mess up the guys who invented the technologies, right down to the microphone for their hate broadcasts.
Hillary? Wake up!
Maybe because it was founded? How else do you explain that the Soviet Union got three seats in the General Assembly (Russian, Belorussia and Ukraine) while the US got one (sorry, the Alaskan and Hawaiian Territories don't get their own seats). The exception of the Korean War happened because the vote to fight back against the North Korean invasion occurred while the Soviet Union was boycotting because the "wrong" China had the Chinese seat at the UN and on the Security Council. No boycott would have meant no UN involvment in the Korean War.
The UN has become sort of irrelevant. Just occasionally it does some good work, but it has become a third world forum with all the baggage that goes with the third world. That would be endemic corruption, huge bureaucracies, nepotism, favoritism, inefficiency and an ongoing hatred of the USA. Add to the mix the fact that Russia, China and one or two other countries take great delight in using the UN’s rules to constantly tweak the USA, and you end up with a supreme waste of time. Remembering the lesson of Russia and the Korean ‘war’, we ignore the UN at our peril but we should spend as little time and money on it as possible.
It was a crapfest from the beginning and of no use. The U.S. should have long ago pulled funding, thrown out the delegates (spies) and sold off the property and yes we do have that right since we have paid for almost all of the infrastructure.

Gen.10 and 11. Nimrod and the Tower of Babel.
Most of the proponents of war with Iran seem to have a purely opportunistic and hypocritical view of the UN. They attack it whenever they disagree but positively love enforcement of UN resolutions, such as the recent ones on Iran.
They might object to the hypocrisy too if they were not stuck paying through the nose for the option. I personally would rather we were out of the UN and it were off our soil. We’d do better to keep what we pay into that rat hole and negotiate through embassies & diplomatic mission, but since we’ve got to pay what we do then I think we should use them to any advantage we can.
