Archbishop [Nienstedt]: Anti-Gay Marriage DVD Will be Mailed to All MN Catholics
KSTP ^ | 09/21/2010 | Mark Albert

Posted on 09/21/2010 1:12:19 PM PDT by Pyro7480

Archbishop John Nienstedt announced Monday that every Catholic in the state will be mailed a DVD defending marriage as between one man and one woman, as he hopes to "rally the troops" around the Church's position on the divisive issue just six weeks before Election Day.

Nienstedt appears at the beginning of the eight-minute video, which was prepared by the Knights of Columbus, and will be mailed to the state's Catholics on Wednesday, paid for by a large donation, the archbishop told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Monday evening. The archdiocesan website lists the state's Catholic population at "approximately 800,000."

"Our target is basically our Catholic people," Archbishop Nienstedt said in an interview. "To remind them of what we believe and why we believe it and why it's so important that they believe it."

Nienstedt spoke to KSTP-TV at the Catholic Defense League's annual Mass and banquet at St. Helena's Catholic Church in south Minneapolis. The archbishop was the keynote speaker at the dinner, delivering a speech to more than a hundred people titled, "In defense of Marriage and Family."

Before the speech, Nienstedt said he hoped the DVD would be a "teaching tool" to parishioners in the 217 archdiocesan parishes.

"It's not partisan politics in any way. But you know, it's kind of rallying the troops around this issue and pointing out to Catholics that this is an important issue in every election year," archbishop Nienstedt said....

I am not Catholic, but God bless any clergyman who will do this for the unborn!

The headline writer seems surprised that the Catholic Church is choosing not to celebrate sin.

If don’t ask, don’t tell, is such a bad policy, I call on all homosexuals in the media to step forward so we can identify WHY these issues are “so important” today.

Are there really only 800,000 Catholics in Minnesota? That’s less than 15.2% of the state’s population (while nationwide Catholics are 22% of the population), and I thought that Catholics were a huge percentage of the population in the Iron Range (Poles, Croats, etc.) and St. Paul (Irish, Italian), and that German Catholics were as prevalent throughout the state as Norwegian Lutherans.

Wikipedia is fairly o.k. on non-controversial stuff.

It says 1,260,660 Catholics, largest religious group in MN, 28%. Cites sources but I haven’t checked them.

800K seems low to me. Maybe His Excellency means folks who actually belong to a parish and show up for Mass. That number could be lower than self-identifying CINOs.

REAL Churches defend the Sixth Commandment....
....they don't vote on it.

This is the type of evangelical episcopate envisioned in Augustana XVIII.

MN has a total population of around 5,270,000, so 28% of the population of MN would be close to 1,500,000 persons. 28% sounds about right to me, since MN must be more Catholic than the nation as a whole. Don’t know why Wikipedia would say that the Catholic pop in MN would be 1,260,660, or 28%, since it can’t be both.

In any event, I’m glad to hear that Archbishop Nienstedt is reminding MN Catholics of the scientific truth that life begins at conception, the moral truth that abortion is the intentional taking of an innocent human life, and the spiritual truth that to support abortion is to engage in the sin of scandal that disqualifies one from taking Communion.

What percentage of MN is Lutheran? I had a friend from MN, and he said that almost everyone, in that state, is Lutheran or Catholic. When I was there, in 2008, for the Republican National Convention, I saw churches of several denominations, including Baptist, Methodist, and Assembly of God.

Not all Lutherans up there are Scandinavian. Many are German, including both sides of my family. Seems most Catholic Germans are down here in MD and thereabouts - Bavarian types (also part of my mom’s family).

The old stereotype is that rural MN was split between Catholic Germans and Norwegian Lutherans and that the two groups were always fighting for control. But I’m sure that many German Protestants (including Lutherans) also emigrated to MN after the 1848 Revolution (even though Catholics from Bavaria appear to have been the most numerous German immigrants during that era).

No idea, but I’m sure that it’s a much lower percentage than what it was 150 years ago or even 50 years ago.

I’m not sure which Sixth Commandment you mean (Adultery or Murder), but given the state of politics in USA today, both apply. Real Churches defend the unborn, real Churches defend marriage. The perverted secularist left attacks both.

Living all my life in Minnesota - I always heard that the population was about 22% Catholic and 24% Lutheran. Of course, the demographics are changing with mobility, and the surge in non-denominational Christians in the past 20-30 years.

Re: German Catholics in Minnesota (and in Wisconsin), they settled in pockets, primarily in the eastern and central part of Minnesota and all over Wisconsin.

In central Minnesota, the major group of German-speaking Catholics were the Rheinlanders and the Luxembourgers intermixed with folks from Westphalia, Oldenburg, Baden and Bavaria. Stearns county also has the first settlement of Slovenians in the USA - St. Stephen. They were Catholics from the Austo-Hungarian empire and spoke both German and their native Slovenian dialect.

Sixth Commandment according to Lutheran, Orthodox, and Catholic numbering = Thou shalt not commit adultery.

“Voting on them” refers to the practice of various national Protestant conventions taking votes on declaring homosexual relations to be on par with marriage, abortion on demand, etc, etc.

The Ten Commandments are not subject to majority vote in the right handed Kindgom. In the Kingdom of the left (civil government) the Commandments as premise and foundation of law should never be voted either, although the laws derived from them can and should be debated.

A great many Lutherans are of German origin. The Missouri Syhod was founded by German immigrants, who left Germany because of their refusal to accept some sort of government-mandated unionism. In a manner much like many Lutherans of Norse ancestry, LCMS worship services were conducted in the language of their origins up to the 1940s, although offered as an alternative to English at that time and for some years prior. Missouri Synod Lutherans were frequently described in common parlance by other Lutherans as “the German church.”

I don’t know if the (currently ELCA) church I joined back in college was ever LCMS, but I know the old heritage church (where my grandparents just happened to elope) in the old town proper spoke/wrote in German up until about that time.

Every religious group, denomination, church, synagogue (would have to be Orthodox I guess, maybe Conservative) should do this or something like it. Standing up for the truth is what all religious leaders should be doing.

Quote from the article:

The DVD will arrive in homes less than six weeks before the Nov. 2nd elections. Candidates for Minnesota governor Mark Dayton (DFL) and Tom Horner (IP) support legalizing gay marriage; Tom Emmer (R) does not.

"We're not a political force," Nienstedt said, "but we are a religious force. So we think we should be part of the conversation."

RIGHT ON!
