Karl Rove: O'Donnell must explain her witchcraft comments
CNN ^ | 09/19/2010 | Alexander Mooney

Karl Rove – the top GOP strategist who declared last week that Christine O’Donnell’s surprise victory does “little good” for the party – is now calling on the surprise Senate nominee to explain her comments about witchcraft.

"In southern Delaware where there are a lot of churchgoing people, they're going to want to know what that is all about,” the former aide to President George W. Bush told "Fox News Sunday."

“My view is she can’t simply ignore it,” he said. “She’s got to deal with it and explain it and put it in its most sympathetic light and move on.”

O’Donnell uttered the comments in question during a 1999 appearance on the now-canceled show “Politically Incorrect,” saying then, “I dabbled into witchcraft – I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. ... I dabbled into witchcraft.”

The 11-year-old interview was dug up Friday by liberal comedian Bill Maher – the former host of Politically Incorrect. During the 1999 appearance, O’Donnell also described one of her first dates – with a witch “on a satanic altar.”

A spokesman for the O’Donnell campaign did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

“She can’t simply say, ‘Oh these are unfactual, and not true,' and just ignore them,” Rove also said. “I don’t think the people of Delaware have or are accepting that as a reasonable explanation.

Citing exhaustion and scheduling conflicts, O’Donnell canceled her plans over the weekend to appear on both "Fox News Sunday" and CBS’ "Face the Nation" – a move Rove called a “smart decision.”

“She shouldn’t have accepted in the first place,” he said. “It’s Delaware voters, not conservatives across the country who will determine the outcome of this election … and there is, as I say, resistance.”

Among all of Rove’s other character flaws that are surfacing, add hypocrite. I seem to recall Bush doing a few things in his youth that he regretted.

Explain, so that we don't just write you off as completely unhinged.

Explain, so that we don't just write you off as completely ignorant of historical and biblical references.

If you think that is bad, I voted for jimmy carter. It makes me utterly sick when I think about it but I was totally busy with raising babies and not paying attention (and believed the lying press—I only had access to agitprop).

I agree with everything you say. I would say all of us made mistakes when we were younger. When you’re young, you’re impulsive, gulliable and stupid in varying degrees.

I might be totally off base here but is there a possibility that Rove is “purposefully” dogging O'Donnell as a way to build her visibility (read: name recognition and message) to the national level? As long as he is raising these things on the news and in print, the leftards continue to talk about her - and she keeps correcting the record or sharing her life to show she is just a normal human being. What he is doing really irks me but you also cannot laugh at the results: a million bucks in the bank and 24/7 coverage that ain't going away. The “addict” (the drive-by media) can't let the stories go and are in a frenzy to get the latest juicy details. Have we found a new way to beat the MSM at their own game?

Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

That is what makes Rush and Beck last....they don't get angry, they laugh and respond with facts. They don't react as a novice would at all. This infuriates the left more than anything and Rush and Beck know how to ridicule back with truth.

We need to use these potent weapons against the liberals. It is fairly easy if you do your homework but it takes practice and you have to control your anger....It helps to get rid of anger if you have a belief in God. When you keep your life in proper prospective, you won't get angry:)

My suggested response:

“I dabbled in witchcraft, but I didn’t inhale.”

The whole thing is ridiculous. I don’t know much about this O’Donnell person, but she sounds charming. I’m guessing she had a date in high school with a guy who wore black eye-liner, black clothes and listened to Cure albums. Sounds like a good, normal 1980’s girl. Karl Rove was probably poring of National Review on Saturday Nights while in high school. Barry on the other hand has admitted that he was snorting coke and lighting up bongs at this time. I don’t want a cokehead in the White House, but have no problem with a former goth girl in the Congress.

I don’t live in DE so it doesn’t personally affect me. However, I wish Tea Party candidates were better vetted. Surely there are some out there without so much baggage.

Tokyo Rove has been stuck on stupid for five 24 hour newscycles on Christine.

He has really jumped the shark this time, proved his irrelevance once and for all, and we know he has been carrying Castle’s water against the TP groups.

Doesn’t say a thing about Castle’s boorish, soreloserman behavior or Lisa Murkowski’s ridiculous write in campaign.

The Architect, won in 2000 by only 535 votes, and in 2004, by 12,000 votes in Ohio. Against idiots like Gore and Kerry.

But, he found time to diss the SwiftBoat Vets in 2004. You know, men who actually wore a uniform, led men in combat, and got wounded for their country—not sitting around scribbling on a whiteboard and commiting punditry.

"Karl Rove: O'Donnell must explain her witchcraft comments"

Karl's position on immigration has done infinitely more damage to this country than whatever O'Donnell was doing back in high school.

IMHO, she's way over the weight limit. But since the plane has lifted off, I hope there are no regrets.

She was the GOP candidate two years ago.

Funny, how no one vetted her then.

You are correct. I read about it in Ann Coulter's book, Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism. I just used it because the Left would take it as an insult to accuse them of McCarthyism. I like what Christine O'Donnell said today about the witchcraft thing: "“There’s been no witchcraft since (O'Donnell's high school days). If there was, Karl Rove would be a supporter now,”

I don’t think it’s a big deal O’Donnell dabbled in the fringes of satanism, kids do that sometimes and grow out of it. I also wouldn’t think it’s a big deal if this had been a democrat candidate similarly speaking about herself as a youngster.

On the other hand I wonder how many people demanding THIS case be shrugged off would have been equally blase with Barbara Boxer or Justice Sonia Sotomayor making the same admission. I’d expect nothing less then a full force rage, demands for her resignation, and generalizations about godless democrats.

There is a lot of hypocrisy in play here. I’ve said it before, there are very disturbing elements in the O’Donnell campaign, and it seems to just keep getting worse.
