Fired, in a Crowded Theater: Can Catholic professor speak about homosexuality without risking job?
First Things ^ | October 2010 | Meghan Duke

Kenneth Howell felt relaxed as he walked across the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, on his way to a Friday afternoon meeting with his department chairman, Robert McKim. He’d turned in his grades for his classes—Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought—a week ago; it was the end of May, and he looked forward to a summer spent on research and writing. It was a rhythm he had become accustomed to in a decade as an adjunct professor in the university religion department, and today promised to be no different, even though the meeting with McKim had been scheduled suddenly, and for no apparent reason.

Moments after he sat down in McKim’s office, the chairman handed Howell a piece of paper he recognized: an email he had sent to his Introduction to Catholicism students. Howell took the email in his hands as McKim leaned back in his chair.

“This could really hurt the department,” McKim said, gesturing at the email and shaking his head. “This could really, really hurt the university.”

The three-page email was dated May 4, nearly a month earlier. The subject line was “Utilitarianism and Sexuality.” Howell had sent it late that evening to help his students prepare for the essay question on the final exam in his Introduction to Catholicism class, and to clarify some points he made in his lecture the previous day on the question of homosexuality in Catholic thought. In that session Howell discussed how natural moral law can be applied to judge the morality of actions, but the discussion became heated, and the class ended with some students and Howell dissatisfied with the conclusion. Howell wrote the email as a way to clarify his point.

Hey if we have our own news outlets, websites and branches of faith untainted by liberalism, why shouldn’t we conservatives start thinking about having our own university systems? I do like Hillsdale College for their guts and tenacity as well as their superior education. We should have more like them.

It's more like "adjunct instructor," not "Professor."

cf, the Obama "Constitutional Law Professor" scam. He was an adjunct instructor, and by all, accounts a damn bad one.

Jesus said something about homosexuality and HE didn`t get fired:

"I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left."

Luke17:34

Are you sure that there is no follow-up to this story? If it is the same story surfacing a couple months ago, the Univ. reversed its decision.

Good article that illuminates the ultra-liberal miasma that pervades the vast majority of our colleges and universities, including the ones that are supported by our tax dollars.

In this fetid leftist atmosphere only liberal orthodoxy is tolerated and woe to the teacher or student that dares speak the truth and make it obvious that the liberal orthodoxy really has no clothes, as it were. It's tragic that although only a small minority of Americans share the left-wing view, our institutions of higher learning are riddled with liberalism in all of it's manifestations. The article reported the attempt by the University of Illinois to fire a well-liked and respected instructor based on a student 'feeling uncomfortable" with a plain moral teaching in a class titled 'Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought' regarding the immorality of homosexual behavior easily understood by any reasonably intelligent person.

How did we ever allow our colleges and universities to sink to this level and can we ever expect to get them back to sanity? I fear we cannot.

Last of the article (which is really long I’ll admit) says that over the summer the University was compelled (under threat of a lawsuit) to effectively reinstate him.

the University was compelled (under threat of a lawsuit) to effectively reinstate him.

Notice, however, that his new title was "visiting" not "adjunct". His salary had previously been paid by the Newman Center, under Illinois's odd arrangement with the churches that supplied teachers of religion courses, and that continued, but he was stripped of the "adjunct" title, thus pushing him away from the University administration.

This is all part of Kirk and Madsen, After the Ball. Make majority opinion the minority opinion, and then suppressed, verboten opinion. They happily admitted they intended to imitate Goebbels in everything.

Lately more than a couple of people on FR have directly told me "there is no "gay" agenda" or "nothing "gays" do affects me". Well, I would assume that the curtailment or elimination of all First Amendment protections would alarm everyone. Everyone except the ruling marxist/homosexualist elites. And, it seems clear, their Islamic soulmates. The rest of us, are mere gulag fodder apparently.

Someone reading this is likely thinking - oh, that lj, so crazy, paranoid, exaggerating as usual. Well, history teaches us that when godless hedonist powermad people driven by false and hellish ideologies, with no constraint of morality, get in power, Very Bad Things happen. And they don't happen in one week, 0 to 60. They happen over decades. The stupid frogs don't realize they're a-cooking.

Smart frogs realize - hey, this water's getting hot! And not only jump out, but do their best to join with other like minded frogs (even if other frogs have slightly different theologies, mind you) and gang up together to throttle those who are trying to boil us alive.

"I say unto you, In that night there shall be two men on one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left."

Luke17:34

Just because two men just happen to be sleeping in the same bed, which was incredibly common in biblical days and even up to more recent times, it doesn't mean they were engaging in abomination.

Luke 17:34 has nothing to do with homosexual perversion. It is talking about the rapture. If there were two homosexuals, neither one would be taken. They'd both be left for the wrath of God (tribulation)

No, He wasn't. He lives.

They tried, couldn't do it.
