Florida's statewide elections this year could hinge on how many black voters, drawn to the polls for the first time by Barack Obama's 2008 presidential candidacy, remain engaged in politics and how many stay home.
"It's very important that African-American voters turn out," said Clarence Anthony, former mayor of South Bay in Palm Beach County, former president of the National League of Cities and former member of the Democratic National Committee.
But, Anthony said, with just eight weeks until Election Day, "I don't think we know what will happen right now."

The GOP has GOT to stop writing off black voters and Hispanic voters and start appealing to them as they appeal to white voters - on the merits of PERSONAL rather than race politics - which is what the DEMOCRATS do. Jobs, a better education, controlling the criminal element and government corruption, and supporting family values - along with a cheaper, less intrusive government are things that can sell in minority neighborhoods if coupled with the commitment of businesses and corporations to help improve things there.
BO won because independent voters were disillusioned with the continuing war in Iraq and Afghanistan,the rise in gasoline prices, the loss of jobs and the bail-out of inefficient or corrupt corporations and Wall Street companies.
BO sold himself as a reformer who would give us energy independence, and a better economy.
