Obama to Call for $50 Billion Spending on Public Works
New York Times ^ | September 6, 2010 | SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

Posted on 09/06/2010 7:56:00 AM PDT by reaganaut1

President Obama on Monday is to call for as much as $50 billion in government spending to start up a long-term public works plan emphasizing transportation projects – roads, rail and airport runways – over the next six years.

Mr. Obama will lay out the plan, which is intended to promote the quick creation of construction jobs but would require Congressional approval, during a trip to Milwaukee on Monday afternoon, where he will observe Labor Day by attending a union festival. The spending is one part of a broader economic recovery package that Mr. Obama is to unveil during a speech in Cleveland on Wednesday.

With Democrats looking at a bleak election season, in large part because of high unemployment, the White House has been scrambling to find ways to jump-start the sagging economy.

While Mr. Obama’s plan would call for investment over six years, the White House says it would be front-loaded with an initial investment of $50 billion in taxpayer money, to help create jobs in the shorter term. The administration says it would work with Congress to find ways to pay for the plan, so that it would not add to the nation’s rising deficit. One possibility would be to cut existing subsidies for oil and gas exploration and production.

White House officials said Mr. Obama wanted to rebuild 15,000 miles of roads, construct and maintain 4,000 miles of railway – enough track to span the continent — and rehabilitate or reconstruct 150 miles of airport runways while putting in place a system that would reduce travel time and airport delays.

The president will also call for what the White House is describing as an “infrastructure bank” that would focus on paying for national and regional transportation projects.

So the quick cure for an economy in depression, is public works projects?????

Correction: The quick cure for the economy is a series of public works projects spread out over the next six years.

"While Mr. Obama’s plan would call for investment over six years, the White House says it would be front-loaded with an initial investment of $50 billion in taxpayer money, to help create jobs in the shorter term."

The GOP leaders in Washington should be demanding a forensic audit of where all of the original "stimulus" money went. We are aready now how many trillions of dollars in debt, and now he wants to spend another $50 BILLION? And, that's just the INITIAL "investment"? (spending the tax payer dollars on roads and airports is NOT an "investment"! No-one is getting any return on this money except probably the state DOTs, and of course, the hand picked construction companies.

How much is this 6-year plan going to cost in total? $50 billion on its face, but how much more will be spent over the course of this plan?i

I'd like to ask Obama how this is going to create lasting jobs for American ciizens? What happens in 6 years when the gov't stops subsidizing the industry? I guess he doesn't care because he won't be around to blame? Or, it's just one more treasonous action meant to further affect the economic situation

I don't suppose that liberals will ever figure out that problems do not get fixed by throwing more money at them. This is infuriating!

you mean, more stimulative infrastructure spending like this?

THe GOP needs a film documentary of abandoned “shovel ready job sites” libned with those stupid “ARRA” obama signs, already sitting empty across this nation.

There’s at least 25 miles along the southern NJ turnpike, obama recovery signs installed, miles and miles of dozers and trucks sitting in the median and by the roadside..... not a soul to be seen working.

Indirectly yes. But the plan is to try to get Republicans to vote for more spending and to allow vulnerable Rats to start screaming about how the GOP voted for more spending.

I noticed the frequent use of ‘Mr.’ Obama in the article. I wonder how many times GWB was referred to as ‘Mr.’ Bush by the NYT?

Chicago Labor Leaders Rally for New Jobs on Labor Day
Illinois’ unemployment rate is higher than nation’s

By IVANNA HAMPTON
Updated 7:48 AM CDT, Mon, Sep 6, 2010

The unemployment rate could finally stop its painful ascent in 2010, according to economists.

About the only thing working in Chicago this Labor Day is a group of people who want jobs.

The Chicago Federation of Labor is holding rally and picnic at Millennium Park at Randolph St. and Michigan Avenue at 11 a.m. Monday, according to a press release to call for good jobs and a strong middle-class before its members and their families.

Currently, Illinois’ unemployment stands at 10.3 percent above the nation’s unemployment rate of 9.6 percent.

Labor leaders are preparing to flex their political muscle as the November election approaches.

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn and Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias and other elected officials are scheduled to attend.

Meanwhile, schools, government offices, postal services, courts and banks are all closed today.

Ah, 50 billion going to Obama's (and Reid's and Pelosi's) carefully selected and politically aligned chums, while the rest of you, and your descendants have your property and wealth confiscated to pay for it.

THIS will surely solve Obama's employment QUAGMIRE, eh?

Absolutely, the last 20 years has been fueld by Americans living on consumer debt. They are now maxed out and it will take a decade to pay down the binge of the 1990s and 2000s. I don't look for recovering consumer demand for a long time. The Austrian School is spot on, this time.

Uh, I thought they already allocated a trillion dollars two years ago that was suppose to improved infrastructure. Oh wait. Silly me. That first trillion actually went to pay off Rat constituents like unions, public employees, ACORN, et. al. Gee, no wonder the economy didn’t improve. And apparently, according to current plan, it would have taken only 50 billion to improve infrastructure and “jump start” the economy.

But guess what, Obummer? You’ve already killed it, and no amount of “jump-starting” is going to bring it back to life under your regime.

I recently read a statement to the effect that the real problem with the economy is that the overall statist behavior of the Obama administration has left both business and individuals with no confidence in the long-term economic prospects of our nation.

Ya think? Ya think maybe folks have lost confidence because Trojan Marxists are in charge of the economy? Ya think maybe the natural reaction to redistributionists trying to claw wealth away from earners for “redistribution” to non-earners would be for the earners to hunker down and try preventing their wealth from being “redistributed”? You know, hunker down, as in not loaning money, not borrowing money, not spending money, not taking risks, not hiring, and not investing. You know, like simply performing no financial transactions at all, since not transacting is the simplest way to keep your wealth from being clawed away and redistributed.

It’s simple, actually. Wealth is extracted from the wealth-creators by the leftist wealth-takers when money flows from one place to another, that is, when a financial transaction occurs. The takers have inserted various money-snatching filters in those money flows, and while stealing a little bit doesn’t hurt too badly, when the money-snatching begins to siphon so much money that a net loss of wealth occurs rather than a net gain, then it’s necessary to shut the spigots.

You can visualize a financial transaction as water flowing in a pipe and taxation as a tap the government installs to steal some of the water. The wealth creators open the spigot and some of their wealth flows down the pipe, say, to sprinkle on a field in order to grow some new factories that employ people and produce goods they can buy with their earnings. Suppose 1000 gallons goes in one end, and the government steals 100 gallons from its tap and gives away gallon jugs to buy votes with or whatever. The remaining 900 gallons end up helping the new factories grow, people are employed, goods are manufactured, and wealth increases for everyone involved. In other words, the economy continues to function.

Now suppose the government steals 400 gallons to “redistribute” and only 600 gallons get through to grow the new factories. Well, the factories fail to grow, and the wealth creators say, “This isn’t working, the heck with this”, and they close the spigot. Now there’s no new factories, and the government gets nothing either. You know, pretty much like the economy we see today under the helm of the Obammunist redistributionists.

Basically, this is simply a modern version of Aesop’s fable, “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs”. The Trojan Marxists currently in charge of the economy are busily eviscerating the goose to reach those last hard-to-reach golden eggs in order to slice them up and “redistribute” them. It’s no wonder the golden egg supply has dried up, now is it?

It’s not a project that will employ as many workers as in the Depression. They will employ heavy machinery to do the work that it took a hundred or a thousand men in the past. This is just a union giveaway.

6 years , 5 years , 1 year building a road.

This man has never ran a hot dog stand and now he is running the country, is it any wonder why many want their vote back and the ones which do not need to get a grip of themselves as they are the dumbest voters this country has ever produced

“The administration says it would work with Congress to find ways to pay for the plan, so that it would not add to the nation’s rising deficit. One possibility would be to cut existing subsidies for oil and gas exploration and production.”

Obama added, “Essentially, we’re going to rob Peter to pay Paul. That way my proposal will be deficit neutral. Furthermore, while everyone knows that robbing Peter to pay Paul accomplishes almost nothing, at least we’re giving the appearance of doing something useful, making a change that we hope will increase business confidence. At least for now, it sure beats re-arranging the deck chairs, which is the only other option I was presented with by my council of economic experts. Hey everybody, I’m starving; let’s go buy some shrimp now! I’m buying the first round!”
