Chicago Police Chief Criticized for 'Gang Summit'

CHICAGO -- The idea seemed simple though bold: Call reputed gang leaders to a meeting with top police and federal prosecutors and deliver an ultimatum to end killings in the nation's third-largest city.

But Chicago police Superintendent Jody Weis is facing mounting criticism for holding a so-called "gang summit" last month, even though several police departments across the country have relied on that approach for decades to help reduce crime.

Among the chief complaints: that Weis himself was at the meeting, that the department should instead be adding more officers on the streets and that gangs won't take the message seriously.

"What are we doing negotiating or having a sit-down with urban terrorists who are killing with guns and drugs on the streets?" Chicago Alderman Bob Fioretti said. "Gangs are not to be coddled."

“Hey, Frankie .... we need some power sharing with the Diablos.”

Cripes. That was 30 years ago...

Sounds like Hill Street Blues

With a young David Caruso portraying the leader of a putative Irish gang while wearing a bowler hat with a shamrock on it, and carrying a shillelagh.

It's amazing how stupid TV can be.

No stupider than Lenny DiCpitated as the toughest street thug in NYC in “Gangs of New York” ... talk about dumb.

That was a beyoot.

As horrible as DiCaprio and Diaz were in that bloated mess of a movie, Day-Lewis, Neeson, Gleeson and Reilly were wonderful.

They made you yearn for a prequel.

About 8 years ago I read how many murders there were in 10 of our larger cities per year.

If I remember corecctly, these 10 cities did not include Memphis,TN, nor Indianapolis, nor Denver.

But adding up the total numbers in the 10 cities, it was far than all the years that were killed in Irah.

Now we have reported that over 4,000 of our military were killed for all the years we fought in Irah.

Can some give us the facts of how many murders have been committed in our cities in the past 9 years?

Squabble between Dem factions, gangs are political muscle in some districts.

Statement: "Chicago Police Chief Criticized for 'Gang Summit'"

Response: Such a "Summit" implicitly recogizes a gang as a legitimate and equal entity with which one negotiates. Secondly, such a "summit" indicates fear on the part of once legitimate authorities; an inability to deal with gangs if you please.

This was a tactic used back in the 1950’s in several large eastern cities and matbe others as well.

Of course the gangs in that era, as bad as they were, seem more like fraternal clubs compared to the slimeball gangs of today.

Yeah ... especially the Lewis - Neeson rivalry.

Here's a fact: 4400 American troops died during the official duration of the Iraq War.

During that time period 3600 people were murdered in Chicago alone.

In the real life version, Cyrus lives and gets elected President of the United States.
