I propose a tax break for all the senior citizens who save them up, neatly flatten them and roll them up, secure them with a rubber band and stow them in kitchen drawers.

By the time I get home from the store, my purchases are spread all over the floorboard or the trunk of my car. The bags frequently break open, spilling & breaking the contents on the ground. You can find them everywhere, even in the air, as litter. They are useless once you get them home, so they fill up my garbage bags & the public landfill. They are a nightmare when tangled on the prop of the boat motor. Obviously, they are not nature friendly. Made from petroleum products, every one we use is a subsidy to our oil producing enemies.
Paper bags are so much better, IMO, as they have none of the above problems. They stand up nicely in the trunk of he car. Liquid products remain upright & do not leak onto the floor - spray bottles are bad about this. They hold more groceries.
I admit, they can melt in the rain & break open, but for disposal purposes, that is a good thing. Double bagging solves that problem & doubles the resulting free luggage.
As a kid, paper bags were a free, primary construction material. A kid can make many things from a paper bag, & not strangle himself in the process.
Paper is made from a renewable resource & made right here in the USA. Paper bags don't fund terrorists. As litter, it doesn't last long & nourishes rather than pollutes the ground it lands on.
