Republican Susana Martinez picked off the support of one in five Democrats and had strong backing from members of her own party to take an early lead over Diane Denish in New Mexico's race for governor, a Journal Poll found.
Sixteen percent of voters were still undecided, but Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff said erosion of the Democratic vote is a problem for Denish, who has served as lieutenant governor [under Bill Richardson] for the past eight years.
Martinez drew more votes than her Democratic opponent among men, Anglos and voters over 50 years old all categories that tend to lean conservative, Sanderoff said.
That, along with some support from Democrats, gave Martinez a good outlook in the race heading up to the general election on Nov. 2. "Politically, it's a very good place to be," Sanderoff said.
~~snip~~
In the Journal Poll overall, Martinez led Denish 45 percent to 39 percent with 16 percent undecided. The poll was conducted Aug. 23-27 by Research and Polling Inc. of Albuquerque. The margin of error for statewide results is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

We have a conservative Hispanic Republican ticket against a liberal Anglo Dem. Take that and smoke it, Harry Reid!
NM list PING!
(The NM list is available on my FR homepage for anyone to use. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list. For ABQ Journal articles requiring a subscription, scroll down to the bottom of the page to view the article for free after watching a short video commercial.)
I love this. Denish has been inundating the airwaves with her ridiculous and fictional ads. The latest one is that Martinez squandered some funds for border security, while Denish “saved” some money.
Nonsense. If any money was left over, then Richardson would have gotten even more drunk, or would have thrown more money to the Rail Runner. Besides, the rat controlled legislature would have found some way of wasting any money, with Denish’s consent.
I hope Martinez mops the floor, and carries Barela and Mullins. Pearce will win for sure, but if we can take total control of the congressional delegation, we can start working towards getting rid of the two rat senators.
Would this be the same John Sanchez from the North Valley who replaced Ray Sanchez (speaker of the Roundhouse and one of the poster boys for tenm limits in the NM legislature)?
If so, has he learned his lesson from that nasty race in 2002?
There are a lot of conservative Dems in New Mexico, and they don’t seem to be too happy with the Obama-Richardson regime.
Thanks for the updates.

Right on!!!
I believe it is.

What lesson might that be? Don't run against a Bill Richardson-type candidate?
Same guy. Obviously he wasn't prepared to go toe to toe with Richardson back then. Seems like Lt Gov is a good spot for him.
After some unnecessary missteps, 2010 is shaping up to be a great year for Republican Hispanic candidates, with Sandoval, Martinez, and Rubio likely winning major offices and Barela, Canseco and Flores have a good shot to go to Congress from NM and Texas.
Has Richardson campaigned for Denish or is he pulling an 0bama and staying away?
I haven’t heard anything. He has been trying to do exactly the opposite of what Arizona is doing. He’ll probably pull an 0bama.
Thanks.
Richardson's numbers are in the tank. I'm sure Denish wants nothing to do with him. See this ABQJournal article posted on FR:
Please add me to your NM ping list. I was a New Mexican for 20 years and was very active in the NM ‘Pub Party.
I met John Sanchez in 2001, right after I narrowly lost an election in 2000. John was an excellent candidate to run against Richardson, and I busted by butt to get him elected. What happened to John was that he was stabbed in the back by a few prominent establishment RINOS, whom Richardson cut deals with. One of the biggest contributors in the state to Republicans gave tons of money to Richardson and raised a lot more besides that, all while keeping a seat on the Republican Executive committee. Sanchez probably would have lost to Richardson anyway, but Republican treachery added insult to the injury.
There were also some white bread Republicans who just couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a NM Hispano against a Washington insider.
And don’t forget about Congressmen-in-waiting Raúl Labrador in ID and Jaime Herrera in WA.
Done
My take is that John Sanchez was definitely a casualty of the old boy machine. I for one am glad Dendahl is gone.
Thanks, CedarDave.
Folks are waking up.
