No, it is in Jilin Province(borders on N. Korea.) Here is a map. Look at the bottom of the map:

Oh sorry, I see.

It’s right across the border from NK.

so much in China attracts me

so much in China repulses me

As I right now dont have enough money to run around twice inside a cheerio, it is a non-factor BUT deep down wish I had the time/money to spend extended travel in China

“Wasn’t there an article yesterday about NK moving 2 divisions of troops to surround Pyongyang?”

Yes.

Perhaps there is a good hospital or a specialist there? Kim is rumored to be very ill.

So he’s heading north rather than northwest, which is his usual path.

Next province north from there, is Huilongjiang.

After that, Russia?

At this point, I don't think Chia Head is going to Russia. If he wanted, he can go directly to Russia from N. Korea(they have shared border on NK's NE end.)

He must have wanted to dodge all media hounding he experienced last time.

Just saying (if) Kim were intending to travel to say, Moscow, would there be any reason he would want to avoid Mongolia?

East into Russia directly would be quite a detour.

(If) west into Russia were the intention, the only reason evident looking at a map for heading into Jian north, would be to go around Inner Mongolia.

Interesting anyway.

Maybe he’s dying. His will states that his remains are to be pickled in cognac. Perhaps we could speed up the process.

If Chia Head crossed at Manpo, Jagang Province of N. Korea, the train only heads SW. It is about 9km to Jian, Jilin Provence, CN. Just across the Yalu.

Jian is noted for "archaeological remains of 40 tombs which were built by Koguryo (37 BC – AD 668), one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, that ruled over northern China and the northern half of the Korean Peninsula".

Yes, Ji’an was one time capital of Koguryo, before its capital was relocated to Pyongyang.

North Korea leader Kim Jong-il is visiting China, possibly accompanied by Kim Jong-un, the elusive youngest son widely viewed as his successor.

The rail trip, which has not been confirmed by either country, dashed hopes of a meeting with former US president Jimmy Carter who is on a mission to North Korea to try to win the release of a jailed American.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Kim might be accompanied by the rarely-seen Kim Jong-un, 27, who is expected to be named to the ruling North Korean party leadership at a rare meeting next month.

Speculation about succession has intensified since Kim Jong-il, now 68, suffered a stroke in August 2008, but he has since recovered sufficiently to work.

"Kim may have decided to tackle this issue in person as China has yet to reach an understanding about the succession at a time when the nuclear issue has not yet been resolved," Professor Yang Moo-Jin of the University of North Korean Studies told AFP.

Chung Seong-Chang of the Sejong Institute said Kim's visit underscored Pyongyang's desperate need for food aid and construction materials from China.

"Ahead of the party convention, Kim has to ease complaints over food shortages and stabilise people's livelihood," he said, adding Kim wants to make sure the September meeting in a festive mood.

Yes,that’s what I was thinking too. Maybe he is in exile.

Is Jimmy Carter traveling with SS protection? Perfect time for a low ranking officer to smoke a diplomat.

Crystal Hotel (Wusong Binguan) Review

Once the only luxury hotel in Jilin, this four-star still offers the city's best combination of comfort and service. Perched several kilometers northeast of the railway station on the east bank of the Songhua Jiang, it is far from most sights in the city but provides good views of the ice-rimmed trees in winter. Decent-size rooms are nicer than the hotel's worn exterior would suggest. Corner rooms are larger and offer the best river views. Bathrooms are clean. Spacious standard rooms on floors 1 through 3 of satellite building C are a good value at about 20% less than comparable rooms in the main building.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; small exercise room; nice spa w/river view; bowling alley; business center; limited room service; laundry

I’ve been to China twice...it’s an amazing place. The Great Wall is so cool to see and walk on. The people are very nice, so many times we would be asked if we were lost or needed directions. We would love to go back again someday.
