Unification Church group eyes The Washington Times

Things might be looking up for the battered Washington Times.

Executive Editor Sam Dealey confirmed there's a preliminary agreement on the table to sell the publication to News World Media Development, a group associated with the Unification Church. The church's leader, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founded the newspaper, though his son Preston Moon has been in control of the publication in recent years.

The deal is subject to a 30-day due diligence period.

"We've been through a lot over the last months -- and frankly asked a lot from some really dedicated reporters and staff -- so obviously there's a healthy sense of relief," Dealey told Yeas & Nays. "Nothing's settled, of course, but it's fair to say this agreement is a very positive turn of events."

I thought members of the Unification Church had ALWAYS owned the Washington Times.

These days, sadly, it’s little more than a pamphlet. The Washington Post rules as DC’s “serious” paper...very unfortunately.

Lots of nominally conservative media properties and think tanks are owned lock-stock-and-barrel by strange bedfellows like the Moonies.

I sometimes wonder if it all amounts to a more sophisticated and varied version of Orwell's "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism" by Emmanuel Goldstein from Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The Washington Post is also in trouble. They're suffering from declining readership and have had to sell off assets to (including their newest printing center in Maryland) balance the books. The Post is circling the drain too.

Mrs. Flash’s cousin is a Moonie, going on 25 years now. She got us tickets to see the Rev. at a hotel. He was boring.

I did feel a little wierd, though, when he exhorted everyone, in unison, to rise and open those peculiar looking plastic containers of grape juice that were on everyone’s table, and drink them all down together.

When in Washington, I always enjoy the Times much more so the the Post. I felt like I have to wash my hands after handling the Post.

You probably did, as the Post has always, since I remember, been known for their cheap ink which after handling the paper makes ones hands dirty...
