So Roger Clemens now finds himself facing significant jail time for lying to Congress about steroid use.
Fine.
If he did it -- lying and juicing up -- he needs to pay the appropriate penalty.
But for Congress to be getting huffy about lies, of all things, is a bit rich.
What happens when Congress -- institutionally and member by member -- lies to the people?
It happens, of course, every day.
Yes, steroid use is wrong -- it's a form of cheating, simple as that.
And yes, perjury is beyond the pale.
But The Rocket fizzled a long time ago -- and congressmembers lie and cheat regularly and reflexively.

Fine him and be done with it. It’s pathetic that anyone in Congress would get huffy over someone lying to them.
In fact, they don’t they each spend 30 days in jail a year to make up to the American people for the rest of the year?
Why don’t the I mean....
BTTT
Lying to those miscreants is a laughable offense, especially considering the subject matter.
Geithner, Bernanke and others who have a direct impact on us lie to congress every time they appear.
Get real.
I still want to know why the hell Congress is involved AT ALL with sports - or any of this.
It was a (I so want to swear) __________________ mystery to me what the hell Waxman was pulling, when he got Clemens to appear before the "Committee on (government) Oversight and Reform" in the first place!
Of course, congress has no business butting into any of this! FGS, those damn people need to be a part time congress!
I think Jim should allow a 10 minute swear break from time to time :-)
And, I fully agree with having a part-time Congress; and given modern technology, in the case of true national emergencies it would take less time to set up a secure meeting than to bring them all back to DC.
Just 10 minutes? I can’t type that fast!!!!
LOL, well, I have noticed more cussing is getting passed the mods over the last year.
I don’t want us to turn into DU with every other sentence having the f-bomb but 10 minutes every few hours would be a great stress reliever!!!
Didn’t some judge somewhere ruled that lying is not a crime? I guess that means you can lie but not in court. OOPS, wait. Bill Clinton lied in court and got away with it. I guess that means you can’t lie to Congress. OOPS, wait. Congresspeople do it all the time.
Well, let’s just make it up as we go along.
UGH, I have too and I’m not one to hit abuse, except on the most vile I come across, or nasty on personal attacks, whether to me or to someone else. Leaving a blank like I did, or stating my desire, works for me.
I’ll usually ask the person to self-delete their post if it’s slightly over the top instead of hitting abuse - only the seriously over the top posts or troll posts get me to bug the mods.
I figure they’re busy enough!!! Plus, there are some Freepers who seem to CONSTANTLY ping the Mods and/or Jim, I can imagine that becomes annoying over time....
I also have noted the sinking standard RE: language allowed on the board. I even made a vanity about it. Got a few posts in support; and several "F%#* you's"; but, bottom line is that the owner is fine with it. Too bad, imo.
Reliance on profanity / vulgarity to make a point reveals things about us. One of the things that attracted me to this place was the opportunity to refine my thinking and writing.
One should strive to write forcefully and convincingly with standard English.
If I were a Juror, I would not convict anyone of lying to the FBI or Congress or any other authorities, until it is a crime for them to lie to us. Basta!
But for Congress to be getting huffy about lies, of all things, is a bit rich.
Yes it is. BUT, MLB has no one to blame but themselves.
They wanted, got, and kept, that neat little Anti Trust exemption from Congress, so they asked for it. When you lay down with dogs, etc, etc.
That being said the whole idea of Congress looking into Ball Players fro 'cheating' by juicing up is abit rich. As Baseball itself is a game of cheating and un-sportsmanship conduct, i.e.:
I'm NOT condoning 'juicing up', but MLB ain't the only place its happening. 'Heck' just look at College & Pro Football Payers. They aren't eating magic beans to get so friggen big. (And - surprise, surprise - after they retire they loose about 150 pounds. Like Tom Thayer, RG, Chicago Bears, Super Bowl XX)
I'd hope Congress has some 'higher' priorities. Then again, let them waste time, its safer for us that way.
(1) I consider Basketball a Contact Sport
Contempt of Congress?
Sure! Who doesn’t?
Clemens could have said,”I won the Congressional Medal Of Honor and i took steroids.” That would have been okay.
Then give all the liberal malpractice legislators life imprisonment for ruining our economy and lives.
I still want to know why the hell Congress is involved AT ALL with sports - or any of this===================
That also my question, but the government is involved any every aspect of every one,s live,s, it is getting to be a sad situation.
I agree. People should be capable of expressing their opinion, displeasure, support or make a convincing argument without resorting to vulgarities.
I’m hardly a language saint and I doubt a day goes by that one cuss word does not come out of my mouth. I’m much more conscience of this flaw, and try to remind myself that I do need to clean up my act.
My biggest complaint about the sites allowance of more cursing is that we do have children and young teens on the site. I was highly embarrassed one day when a neighbors 10 year old son was over; he had a school assignment to write a report on some political topic (I can’t remember what exactly) and I was helping him.
I searched FR knowing I’d probably find information for him and did run across a thread. Half-way down someone came out with a vulgar word normally associated with cats and I said something about it - and as you were I was called a prude, told to get over it blah blah blah. The fact I was sitting there with a 10-year old after having told his mother this was a safe site to check didn’t register.
I’m much more careful now.
