Controversial remarks about homosexuality and religion have forced the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office to begin investigating what happened when Deputy Jim Goff was caught on camera by religious protesters. Several deputies were called to the Hard Rock Casino Albuquerque presents the Pavilion on July 17 to escort several religious protesters away from the entrance gate. The protesters taped their preaching and the encounter . “I am a non-believer, there is no God, there is no Jesus, there is no Satan,” Goff said to the protesters. He later told the cameraman, “You must have a crush on me. Man are you like a gay homosexual? You keep filming me.”

I wish that the Constitution had noted that atheism, as a matter of faith, ought to be considered a type of religion. I would not ask the Constitution to judge atheism -- the whole idea of the First Amendment is that government ought not to do that. But to put atheism in the proper category would have helped.

For too long we have been plagued by politicians who relentlessly push Atheism on the public and treat that task as their consitutional duty because government should not favor one religion over another. The notion is wrong from start to finish.

We need a separation of ‘belief system’ and state. And that would include belief systems defined as much by what they don’t believe as by what they do believe, whether they call themselves atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, or whatever. Such people and groups should have no more access to government, or government schools than the traditional religions.

So Deputy Jim Goff when you take that last breath here on earth and they have you planted at Forest Lawn. Will your tombstone read “All dressed up and no place to go?” Aim at nothing, and you will hit it everytime.
