51% Say U.S. Should Help Israel If It Attacks Iran
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 8/19/2010 | Rasmussen Reports

Iran’s first nuclear plant is expected to go online within the next few days, and some speculate that Israel will take military action to prevent it. Fifty-one percent (51%) of U.S. voters believe the United States should help Israel if it attacks Iran.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 35% say the United States should do nothing in the event of an Israeli attack on Iran, and two percent (2%) think America should help the Iranians.

Support for helping Israel is up nine points from two years ago when just 42% believed the United States should help the Jewish state if it launched an attack on Iran.

Despite Iran’s claims that the nuclear facility is intended for energy production, 66% of voters in this country think the purpose of Iran’s nuclear program is to develop weapons. Just seven percent (7%) say its purpose is the development of energy. But a sizable number (27%) are not sure.

That is deeply troubling.

Very long piece that should be read: explains the various catastrophic consequences and what motivates Israeli (and Iranian) leaders, particularly Netanyahu.

This tells me 49% haven’t been sat down and explained the consequences of a nuclear armed ultra radical Iran and what it means to the rest of the world is all.

Ignorance is bliss right up until the big bright flash somewhere.

America should help with an attack on Iran only if it has decided to do so, whether with Israeli help or not. In this instance, I’d say America would be best served if the Israelis did not visibly help.

If Israel pre-emptively attacks, they should be on their own.

If that happens and Israel winds up in trouble (Unlikely though it is and I can’t foresee it), America should only intervene if existential survival is in question. And if so, their act gives them the right to occupy and re-establish Israel according to their wishes, including rules on no more arms sales or tech transfer to China and other opotential US hostiles, etc.

America may have their interests severely damaged by hasty Israeli action, so the US shouldn’t help them without some pretty decent fees.

” Fifty-one percent (51%) of U.S. voters believe the United States should help Israel if it attacks Iran. “

That’s not great. Maybe the question was too open-ended for people to commit to a “yes” answer?

Actually only 2% are total kooks - I find that encouraging.

Welcome to the asylum of our era. A 50% split on such a basic, obvious issue and the lunatics in power.

Me too. Whenever FReepers look at a poll, they have to remember a couple of things:

1. About one third of the respondents are liberal.
2. Half of that third are radical liberal.

The results of the poll should reflect that.

Israel is not going to do anything, especially now that a timetable has been put out, why? Because their airplanes would be sitting ducks. John Bolton should have kept his mouth shut IMHO. Another attempt to sabotage our allies. First Bush did, and now this administration is doing it. I think there is more to the “Iran” problem than we know. We are scared about something.

Define “help.”
