AUSTIN Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Monday put the 5-year-old federal investigation into his relationship with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff behind him and turned his attention to an impending trial on Texas ethics issues.
DeLay said federal prosecutors told his attorneys last week that he had been "cleared" of any criminal violations in their investigation of Abramoff.
The formerRepublican lawmaker, who represented Sugar Land from 1984 to 2006, also said he is ready for up to three days of pre-trial hearings slated to start Aug. 24 in Austin on a state money-laundering charge related to campaign finance issues from the 2002 elections.
"It was good news to hear from the Justice Department that I have been cleared," DeLay said in a conference call with reporters.
"I know this is the price of leadership, but frankly, it doesn't have to happen this way. I hope people will look at my case and decide the criminalization of politics and the politics of personal destruction is not beneficial to our country or our system."
Justice Department officials declined comment.

whats going on?

Did you read the article?
Delay had two processes of investigation going on , one from the Abramhoff scandal which was federal. Delays Aid took gifts from Abramoff, Delay did not.
One Dem County prosecutor in Texas said DeLay was laundering campaign money , when all DeLay had done was to transfer funds from one account (state) to a federal campaign account, and back. This is normal practise. It is not money laundering.
They had to shop three juries in Texas before they could get one to return an indictment.
Because of GOP party rules, anyone being “investigated” for a criminal offence has to resign their seat, while in the Dem party the rule is that they must be convicted of any offence.Delay had to resign his seat, and also Mccain and a bunch of RINOS made sure he did not get access to any possibility of a legal defence fund.
It was the most egregious move that conservatives could suffer. Without DeLay as a whip in the house, the RINOS were able to divide and conquer the GOP, and the conservative legislative agenda was abandoned by the Senate in the work of the notorious Gang of 14, including McCain.
DeLay has been exhonerated on his federal investigation after 6 years of false charges, and now he turns to have the false charges against him in Texas dismissed. This is a Dem abuse of our legal system, and a travesty to the Congress who lost a good man, feared by the Dems, when he was needed most.
Welcome back Tom. Heres to you re-entering the fray just when we need conservative strength as much as we ever have!

YES!!!
sure wish he had got this ruling before dancing with the stars.
I had forgotten much of the early details..its been awhile.
I never read about that, I'd like to have a link to that, I have some 'moderates' on another board telling me that I'm a dumb ignorant redneck that gives 'conservatives' a bad name for 'defending' a 'sleazebag' like Tom Delay.. LMAO I know they're FOS. They also say Rush Limbaugh gives 'conservatives' a bad name.

That was Ronnie Earle, Travis County District Attorney. Since the State Capital is in Austin (Travis County) the District Attorney has jurisdiction over all such political cases. Ronnie is a Democrat who ran his own little political fiefdom for years and reveled in his power. He was getting back at DeLay for helping the state Republicans get a fair redistricting done in the state. The Democrats had been in charge for years and had gerrymandered districts to assure continued Democrat control. DeLay helped remedy that.
An interesting aspect of the case was that the law they finally got a grand jury to indict him for breaking wasn't even the law at the time. It was passed after the event and was applied retroactively.
It was a political lynching, pure and simple. Do the Democrats suffer for such dirty shenanigans? No! It is expected of them but the Republicans must be pure as the driven snow or they are ground into the dirt.
Tell them it’s 98 percent of Democrats who give all the rest a bad name......
The message from rats to conservatives these past 20 years has been, “If you are an effective conservative, we will destroy you and your family.”
Until we are willing to abuse the judicial system every bit as much, we will continue to find our leaders run out of office. Palin is a recent example. Expect some garbage soon on Rep Boehner.

No surprise here. They are nationalist soclialists, radicals, the pejorative term is fascist. Its time to wake up to that as a fact and send them packing so they never bother us again.

Ronnie Earle, that corrupt Democrat prosecutor who engaged in Nifongism, resigned from the case and even lost his primary run for Lt. Governor.
Partisan witchhunts continue.
The meme is that DeLay gerrymanded the last redistricting strictly to help the GOP.
The truth of the matter is that Chris Bell, Democrat, was p*ssed that he lost HIS congressional seat to a black Democrat due to redistricting.
Now Chris Bell couldn't come out against the black Democrat without coming off as just another bigoted Democrat. So instead as a lame duck congressman, he launched an ethics charge at Tom DeLay.
Chris Bell, what a thug.
The Comical didn't consider it newsworthy enough.
They saved that for a blog.
Feds clear Tom DeLay (August 16, 2010)
There must not have been enough room in the daily edition for this headline to see print.
From the Journolist-gate media-DNC collusion news item:
Documents show media plotting to kill stories about Rev. Jeremiah Wright [Journolist] (The Daily Caller ^ | July 20, 2010 | Jonathon Strong)
Part of me doesnt like this sh!t either, agreed Spencer Ackerman, then of the Washington Independent. But what I like less is being governed by racists and warmongers and criminals.Ackerman went on:
I do not endorse a Popular Front, nor do I think you need to. Its not necessary to jump to Wright-qua-Wrights defense. What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwingers [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear. Obviously I mean this rhetorically.
DNC Brownshirts mean to take down the "enemy" (not of the US but of "The Party") by any means necessary including fraud and overt violence (their tire slashing, arson, and kidnapping cases are proof of that).
Bring The Hammer on.
It was my understanding that Texas passed the one remaining law Delay is accused of breaking after the event. It wasn’t even a crime when he did it.
“...but the seriousness of the CHARGE...” < /Houston Commiecle blather >
I know this; if the new conservative House members do not immediately go after Hussein, National Socialist Healthcare, Cap & Tax, his radical czars, Holder, Pelosi, corrupt rats, Fudge Vaughn Walker, etc, the day after the election, the rat media complex will once again frame the debate.
If the new members get boxed into discussing “GOP obstructionism, meanness, racism, extreme right wingers,” it will be over. Kiss off what is left of our pathetic republic.
They couldn’t handle the loss in Ad revenue if they ran both of these stories on the same day...
The “cleared” story Ibet ran wayyyyyyyy back in the paper, as this one ran front page above the fold...
The Houston Comical...”When you absolutely, positively need to line the bottom of your birdcage...”
If a fair prosecutor now is handling the case, this will be over in jig time.
Earle is a scum, and deserves disbarment. The Grand Jury
who indicted DeLay should be ashamed of themselves, especially the foreman who was a known Dem political hack
who brow beat the jurors to issue the indictment, and that was Earles 3rd grand jury empanelment.
The fix is still in, the judge said that if the prsecution can prove that Corporate donations were being hidden by the fund transfer process from Washington, then Delay is in jeopardy. Tis will be a battle of the accountants. No jury will convict DeLay if it is free and fair.
There are a number of charges and the judge dismissed the ooneinvolving the the law that had not been passed at the time of the alleged offence.
But the idea that Corporate donations that were sent to Wshington to the fedeeral campaign fund and then re-released to Texas candidates as if they were individuakl contributions is the argument that the Stae of Texas is making.
Only individual contributions can be used to fund Texas cadidates. Thus the money laundering charge. The fact is that Delay sent all of his Texas contributions to the federal campaign for re-release to Texas candidates, the question is whether more money was sent to those candidates than individuals gave. The state of Texas says it can prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. We will see what the jury says.
Thank you for posting a very accurate synopsis of DeLay getting the full Saul Alinsky treatment. They got rid of DeLay just as they did Newt - and if Boehner is our next Speaker, they’ll try to do it again.
Thanks for the additional info. Remember the to-Oklahoma-and-back tango the Democrats pulled? That was a real laugher. Each time a special session was called off they went.
I thought that the law DeLay was being charged with violating came after the alleged “transgression”.
The indictment has more than one charge. The one you mentioned was dismissed on a preliminary motion. The others will go to trial.
