Ariz. cop known for illegal immigrant tents to speak in Nashua

NASHUA - Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio will speak at a Sept. 12 Republican fundraiser on his efforts to give local authorities power to enforce immigration laws.

Arpaio is known for pushing the bounds for how local law enforcement agencies can confront illegal immigration.

He said last week he plans to house illegal immigrants convicted under Arizona’s new immigration law in tents in the desert.

About 1,300 U.S. citizens and illegal immigrants are serving time in Arpaio’s tents for convictions for theft, domestic violence, drunken driving, identity theft, human smuggling and other crimes.

The sheriff’s office has housed inmates in canvas tents during Phoenix’s triple-digit summer heat since August 1993.
