A foolish trip
NY Post ^ | August 9, 2010 | Kirsten Powers

The first lady's well-publi cized, expensive vacation in southern Spain last week was a PR gift to her husband's opposition.

After all, we're in the middle of a major recession, with many Americans suffering terribly. President Obama himself, in discussing American economic woes with George Stephanopolous in January, said, "Everybody's going to have to [sacrifice]. Everybody's going to have to have some skin in the game."

"Sacrifice for thee but not for me" is not a great campaign slogan.

Plus, Obama's worst political weakness has been with white-working class voters, who've viewed him with suspicion at least since the 2008 primaries. Mrs. Obama's jaunt through an expensive resort town in a one-shouldered Jean Paul Gaultier top won't help on that front.

It also plays into a favorite right-wing attack: branding Democrats as elitists who can't relate to average Americans' struggles.

In 2004, Citizens United ran a 30-second ad that called the Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. John Kerry, "another rich liberal elitist from Massachusetts who claims he's a man of the people." And no one will forget the famous wind-surfing ad.

In 2008, Obama himself fed it with his comment about voters' "clinging to guns and religion." Media elements used "Joe the Plumber" to "prove" that the candidate hated the middle class.

Michelle’s bald statement some weeks ago: “Dessert is not a right,” is really ‘let them eat cake’, and voters — along with every kid in America — know it. She’s constantly photographed eating ice cream cones, sundaes, and God knows what else. She’s also said she and Barack ‘used’ to have the same financial worries as everyone else...how to pay for the kids’ college, meeting the mortgage, car payments, grocery bills...so they feel our pain. Much like the Muslim spokeswoman for the proposed 9/11 NYC mosque, who also feels our pain. This entire administration is one big conspiracy, and it ain’t good for America.

Lets not forget Guantanamo, Iraq, Afganistan. How many promises broken? But...
Hope and Change are acomin’ - make no mistake. Just not quite what the new black panthers and acornites thought was their due.

"Plus, if she keeps this up, she will be able to vacation anywhere she wants in about two years."

Stop it, Kirsten! You're hurting me!

This is another log on the fire. Whatever we as taxpayers paid for this trip will be worth every penny in November and again in 2012.

I think most liberals are shocked because, in their little minds, this is what conservatives do during a recession.

Now it is one of their own and they are taken aback by the image.

I’m beginning to wonder if the new tactic is to make missteps, so they can show a pattern of criticism when they play the POTUS race card. Rangel and Waters and the CBC are collectively playing it now, with all of their combined abuses, hoping the sheer weight of their stupidity will come across as a racist attack on them. The “Audacity of Scum”, IMHO.

Kristin isn’t looking forward to debating this on Hannity. She did get her snarky remarks in on McCain and Bush though.

Pray for America

George W. Bush, the Ivy-educated scion of a wealthy political family, managed to come off as just plain folks despite once joking to rich supporters, "Here we have the haves and the have mores. Some call you the elite; I call you my base." Man of the people, indeed.

B.S. Kirsten, that joke was at the Al Smith dinner - not a bunch of "rich supporters".

I love the zinger at the end.

Plus, if she keeps this up, she will be able to vacation anywhere she wants in about two years.
