NRA Steps up Anti-Kagan Campaign
U.S.News & World Report ^ | August 2, 2010 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 08/03/2010 1:04:17 PM PDT by neverdem

The National Rifle Association is stepping up it's campaign to shoot down the Supreme Court nomination of Elena Kagan in the face of a likely Senate confirmation this week as the Senate rushes to get finish its work and head off to a six-week summer break. [See a slide show of 10 Facts That Will Influence Kagan's Decisions.]

In a call to supporters to urge senators to vote no, the NRA compares Kagan to President Obama's last court pick, Sonia Sotomayor, who seemed to back the Second Amendment in confirmation hearings but who later voted against it in a test case. "Last year, Sonia Sotomayor deliberately misled the American people by claiming she believed it was 'settled law' that the Second Amendment protected an individual right to keep and bear arms. This year, she proved she never really believed that by ruling against the Second Amendment in McDonald v. City of Chicago," says the gun lobby. "Now, Elena Kagan has used the same phrases—'settled law' and 'precedent'—to describe her view of the Second Amendment in the hearings. It is critical that the members of the U.S. Senate not fall for the same trick twice!"

The memo is below:

Last Chance To OPPOSE Elena Kagan's Confirmation to U.S. Supreme Court

On Tuesday, July 20, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13-6 to send Elena Kagan's Supreme Court nomination on to the full Senate for a vote. The full Senate vote on the confirmation will occur the week of August 2nd. NOW is the time to contact your U.S. Senators and strongly urge them to OPPOSE and filibuster the Kagan nomination!

As we've been reporting in these pages, on July 1, in a letter to the U.S. Senate, NRA announced its strong opposition to her confirmation. Prior to the Senate Judiciary Committee vote, we ran print ads in Politico, Roll Call, and The Hill newspapers, and ran a nationwide commercial on Fox News and on the Internet opposing Kagan's confirmation.

Both her political career in the Clinton Administration and her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee make it clear that Kagan is a serious opponent of our Second Amendment Rights.

Last year, Sonia Sotomayor deliberately misled the American people by claiming she believed it was "settled law" that the Second Amendment protected an individual right to keep and bear arms. This year, she proved she never really believed that by ruling against the Second Amendment in McDonald v. City of Chicago.

And now, Elena Kagan has used the same phrases—"settled law" and "precedent" —to describe her view of the Second Amendment in the hearings. It is critical that the members of the U.S. Senate not fall for the same trick twice!

You can find contact information for your U.S. Senators by using the "Write Your Representatives" tool at www.NRAILA.org. You may also contact your Senators by e-mail at http://www.capwiz.com/nra/dbq/officials/, or by phone at (202) 224-3121.

Please contact your Senators TODAY and ask them to OPPOSE and filibuster the Kagan nomination—the future of our Second Amendment rights depends on it!

As much as we’d like to see it, a Democrat nominee will never get ‘Borked’, because Senate Republicans are mostly little girls.

Seriously? Isn’t this a little late? Or am I confused (always a possibility)...

I see the NRA is exercising their 1st amendment rights as provided for in the DISCLOSE Act.

“...Sonia Sotomayor, who seemed to back the Second Amendment in confirmation hearings...”

No she did not. She never backed the true meaning or the straw men meanings of the second amendment and that info was widely known at the time. The NRA backing her was the NRA backing gun control.

Apparently the NRA figures it’s SAFE to FINALLY challenge Kagan, given the fact that enough super RINOs are voting to confirm!!! Or, maybe the organization simply wasn’t able to make another under the table deal for its own benefit!!

The NRA opposes Kagen yet they're just weeks away from endorsing Harry Reid who's sure to vote to confirm her.

I've been a Life Member since age 15. If they endorse Reid I'm gone.

Come November, those Super RINO’s will be looking for a new home. To even a moron, the Second Amendment says what it means and means what it says. I suspect that the people that are against the Second Amendment are all for the Mosque at Ground Zero.

Back her? Why did the NRA score that vote? They opposed Sotomayor. All the rats in the Senate have that vote on their record. Now those rats are in a bind with Kagan's vote.

FOR THE FIRST time in its 138-year history, the National Rifle Association is counting the votes on a Supreme Court nominee in its ratings of senators. That means senators -- including members of the Judiciary Committee who are due to vote on Sonia Sotomayor on Tuesday -- will have to choose between voting for the first Hispanic nominee and getting high marks from the premier gun rights organization, which opposes her confirmation.

Its too late. The Dems have the votes. Its a fundraising ploy by the NRA. All organizations including both political parties use these controversies to raise money. Next case.

Where's the appeal for donatons? How do you think the NRA, GOA, etc. determine their ratings of politicians? I'll give you a hint. Besides what the politicians say, their votes count too.
