Fury as Israel president claims English are 'anti-semitic'
The Telegraph ^ | 7/31/10 | David Harrison and Adrian Blomfield in Jerusalem

Posted on 07/31/2010 9:50:54 PM PDT by Nachum

Israel's president has accused the English of being anti-semitic and claimed that MPs pander to Muslim voters.

Shimon Peres said England was "deeply pro-Arab ... and anti-Israeli", adding: "They always worked against us."

He added: "There is in England a saying that an anti-Semite is someone who hates the Jews more than is necessary."

His remarks, made in an interview on a Jewish website, provoked anger from senior MPs and Jewish leaders who said the 87-year-old president had "got it wrong".

But other groups backed the former Israeli prime minister and said the number of anti-semitic incidents had risen dramatically in the UK in recent years.

So you criticize Burchill because you say she is from the Left, and now you criticize Karsh because he is from the Right.

One would almost believe that Left or Right, Jew or Gentile, if they support Israel you will find fault.

Typical Brit. Proves my thesis for this entire thread.

I made no criticism of Karsh. None. Nada.

I made the point that the fact that he is employed in London, hardly fits your portrait of the UK.

>>> "Typical Brit"

Proves my thesis - that you're the bigot on this thread.

Yes. Lets give a standing ovation that a Jew is employed in London.

The dictionary defines “childlike” as “like or befitting a child, as in innocence, trustfulness, or candor”.

That can’t be a bad thing.

That’s a possibility. But it doesn’t change the facts of British history.

Having a hard time following along?

There are only a few continents—it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out the one which the British sent colonials to and figure out how many of the aboriginals were slaughtered by whatever means available. You know, it’s not like there’s reams and reams of historical documents and attitudes to which you could refer.

Sheesh, and I thought the denizens of this forum were smart.

Cheap insults and half-baked arguments. So Australia is on the hate list, as well as us.

I just found out today that Australia grows coffee. I had no idea. I'm going to buy some and see how it is.

I've also been trying to find out if its possible to grow coffee in Texas. We are tropical, lots of rain and heat....might work. No one that I know is doing it, but it sounds like a fun project.

Nothing to do with this topic, but the topic of this thread sucks anyway. :)

Yeah, sure. Blame the Jews. Blame the victims. They should just shut up and take it, right?

They’re going to end up having to expel the muezzies the way they expelled the Jews. And the Catholics, for that matter.

The victims in this case are the average non anti-semetic Brits who have been slandered.

In a current article in the Jerusalem Post about Cameron: David Cameron looking both ways

this new book is mentioned:

Trials of the Diaspora: A History of Anti-Semitism in England

Trials of the Diaspora is a ground-breaking book that reveals the full history of anti-Semitism in England. Anthony Julius focuses on four distinct versions of English anti-Semitism. He begins with the medieval persecution of Jews, which included defamation, expropriation, and murder, and which culminated in 1290 when King Edward I expelled all the Jews from England. Turning to literary anti-Semitism, Julius shows that negative portrayals of Jews have been continuously present in English literature from the anonymous medieval ballad "Sir Hugh, or the Jew's Daughter," through Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, to T. S. Eliot and beyond. The book then moves to a depiction of modern anti-Semitism--a pervasive but contained prejudice of insult and exclusion that was experienced by Jews during their "readmission" to England in the mid-17th century through the late 20th century. The final chapters detail the contemporary anti-Semitism that emerged in the late 1960s and the 1970s and continues to be present today. It treats Zionism and the State of Israel as illegitimate Jewish enterprises, and, in Julius's opinion, now constitutes the greatest threat to Anglo-Jewish security and morale. A penetrating and original work, Trials of the Diaspora is sure to provoke much comment and debate.

Here's the stats on UK aliyah to Israel. You'll see that it's more than doubled since 2002, although still under 1000 a year. And that doesn't count people to move on an extended basis to Israel but don't formally make Aliyah.

I can only speak anecdotally about the U.S. But I do live in NY. And there are more Brits around today then there were 5 years ago.

Also keep in mind there are about 280,000 Jews in the U.K., or about 1/20 the number there are in the U.S. But aliyah from the U.K. is only about 4 times smaller. So, in percentage terms, British Jews are about 5 times more likely than American Jews to make aliyah (although still much smaller than 1% a year). That might have to do with higher levels of religiousity and/or Zionism. But hostility to Jews could certainly be a factor as well.
