Billboard Protest of Police Layoffs in Michigan Fuels Public Safety Debate

Police officers in Bay City, Mich., are being called domestic terrorists after renting billboard space to trumpet that the layoffs of five police officers in the town could lead to more shootings, stabbings, robberies and beatings.

The police say they paid for the two billboards that went up last week to bring attention to the impasse in negotiations between its union and city officials, who are seeking a 10.8 percent reduction in labor costs from eight unions to tackle a $1.66 million budget deficit for the fiscal year that began July 1. The billboards also spotlight the city's decision to replace the roof on city hall for $1.6 million.

There once was a union maid, she never was afraid
Of goons and ginks and company finks and the deputy sheriffs who made the raid.
She went to the union hall when a meeting it was called,
And when the Legion boys come ‘round
She always stood her ground.

Oh, you can’t scare me, I’m sticking to the union,
I’m sticking to the union, I’m sticking to the union.
Oh, you can’t scare me, I’m sticking to the union,
I’m sticking to the union ‘til the day I die.

This union maid was wise to the tricks of company spies,
She couldn’t be fooled by a company stool, she’d always organize the guys.
She always got her way when she struck for better pay.
She’d show her card to the National Guard
And this is what she’d say

You gals who want to be free, just take a tip from me;
Get you a man who’s a union man and join the ladies’ auxiliary.
Married life ain’t hard when you got a union card,
A union man has a happy life when he’s got a union wife.

Time and time again, the police and their lawyers have said, in courts of law, that the police are not there for anyone's public safety.

They're there to uphold the law --period.

Police talking about public safety is the same as teachers saying they need more money 'for the children'.

IOW, it's a canard.

Public employee unions have price themselves out of the market. Going forward expect to see alot of cities firing almost everybody and out sourcing the work (sheriff will pick up the policing). Also expect a lot of cities to go bankrupt and stop paying the retirement benefits of old city workers.

"If they cannot do their job…we have to consider alternatives to provide public safety,"

And the other side of the coin...

Ahhhh, the “entitlement” mentality is not limited to those on welfare....it’s alive and well in our various government institutions....they are now saying “either pay me my grossly inflated salary or your house may burn down, or your kid may be beaten, etc.”

Extortion never looked so good.

Tooooo sad!!!

...the layoffs of five police officers in the town could lead to more shootings, stabbings, robberies and beatings.

Prediction: You will not see such billboards put up by Las Vegas PD, Atlanta PD or New Orleans PD.

Cops show up only AFTER the crime.

When I reported a gaggle of strangers in my backyard, trespassing on MY property - the cops told me (over the phone) “Call us back if they do anything”.

DUDE

So, I have to tolerate lawbreakers only if they “do something”? They were already breaking the law by congregating on my property without my permission. The donut brigade was apparently too busy to come out and chase them off.

I have no problem taking matters into my own hands, but the local Keystones here? More than likely I’d be the one going to ladies’ lockup.

They, and their union shills, should all be canned.

I heard the solution to that problem you described.

The cops have an “escalation” list.

If you told them that it looked like there was a scuffle or some sort of conflict, and you THINK you saw a gun,

they’d come and check it out.
