Day full of crime no surprise in Oakland
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/20/10 | C.W. Nevius

Posted on 07/20/2010 7:39:18 AM PDT by SmithL

In less than a 24-hour span, a motorist wearing body armor engaged in a gunbattle with police on Interstate 580 in Oakland, a Virginia man in the Bay Area for a job interview was slain downtown and a West Oakland sniper fired on police from a high-rise building.

Here in paradise, nobody even blinked.

With the layoffs of 80 police officers last week, and the threat of losing 120 more officers without a $50 million taxpayer bailout in November, Oakland residents don't really expect a whole lot. Our collective expectations have been downsized.

So while the most recent 24-hour crime-filled span that started Sunday morning shortly after midnight might have startled residents in other cities of comparable size, it's pretty much standard weekend fare around here.

Oakland residents aren't numb to violent crime. But over the years our tolerance level has slowly ratcheted upward.

It's a civic attitude that's been noticed by others.

At a community meeting soon after he took office last October, Batts was shocked by residents' apathy to the city's staggering crime rate. He wondered why residents weren't up in arms over the situation.

Well done, Dellums. You’ve governed Oakland as well as you managed your U.S. House Bank checking account.

Why in the hell would anyone in VA leave this wonderful state to move to (gag) Oakland?

Uh, I dunnowhy they’re not up in arms... maybe because THEY CAN’T CARRY GUNS in Oakland?

An armed populace would go a long way towards reducing the need for expensive pensioners oops I mean cops who are mainly effective at showing up (eventually, maybe) and taking a report.

Oh yeah, and also enforcing antipollution and traffic laws on the docile segment of society, and tasing anyone who looks at them crosseyed. They’re actually pretty good at those things.

How are those 80%/55 retirements working out for the city there, looters?

Law-abiding citizens can't carry guns. But people like the gentleman above don't care about the law. He carries a gun. And he suggests that you don't talk to the cops about the crimes you witness.

Demography is destiny. Oakland simply has too many bad people, products of feral “families” and a failed, dysfunctional, dependent subculture. People who are not morally depraved do not rob and kill merely because there is no policeman there to stop them.

Oakland has been the anus of northern California for at least five decades.

It’s always the criticial stuff they threaten to cut first. Never the useless overhead.

It's the justification they use to extort more $ from the few who are still working and paying taxes.

The few who are still working and paying taxes better get the HE!! outta Dodge (Oakland). This won't be the last request for tax increases by a long shot.

There are plenty of other places to start cutting. Instead, they prefer to cut where it hurts the tax paying public the most.

I'm confused. Wasn't Oakland always a static crime wave?
