WASHINGTON -- President Obama and congressional Republicans went to war yesterday over extending unemployment benefits for millions of out-of-work Americans.
"It's time to stop holding workers laid off in this recession hostage to Washington politics," Obama said. "It's time to do what's right, not for the next election, but for the middle class."
Obama's hot rhetoric in the Rose Garden sought to divert voters' anger over the sputtering economy to Senate Republicans, who don't want the government to borrow $34 billion for another extension of benefits.
Republicans support extending jobless benefits only if the bill is paid for, which goes hand in hand with their argument that runaway government debt is undermining an economic recovery.
The GOP says that unused stimulus money could be used to fund the benefits extension or that spending could be cut so the deficit won't be increased. Some also believe the lengthy period of benefits can discourage people from job hunting.

Um - the French Revolution? Are you implying that the French Revolution had an impact on the Constitution?
Lastly - "Social Contract" is used today to mean something ENTIRELY different that that which was meant 300+ years ago - kind of like the word liberal has changed meaning dramatically.

What did people do before Franklin D. Roosevelt? Answer: They did what my family did.
1) Families relied on savings which was once possible to do since we had very little to no inflation. At one time our government didn’t hide its taxation by printing bogus money.
2) Next came the family. My grandmother and her husband took in her **entire** family during the government caused Great Depression. That included two brothers, their wives and children, and her parents.
3) There were the very vigorous fraternal organizations which were essentially health and welfare insurance organizations. They took care of the unemployed, those needing medical care, and ran old age ( assisted living) homes and hospitals.
4) Of course, members of churches took their responsibility before God to be charitable very seriously.
5) Finally, if all else failed there were the **county** ( note the level of government here) poor houses and hospitals.
One more thing:
My brother needed a colon resection. It cost $55,000. A friend’s dog also needed a colon resection. ( It had chewed up and swallowed a pair of under pants.) The dog’s operation and recovery cost $3,000. Same operation. Same recovery. Same level of surgical and nursing care. One operation cost $55,000 and the other $3,000. Both the dog and my brother recovered uneventfully.
I remember a time in the U.S. when people could go to the hospital for a major illness and write a check to cover the cost. Think about that.
I don't farm, but my family has for over 110 years in this county. The farm programs were "forced" on farmers by FDR to "stablize prices" and "control" production. The control is done with both "carrot & stick" controls. Many farmers want to move away from subsidies, but in order for that to happen the controls must also go away. Did you ever see a bureaucracy ever eliminate themselves?
Oh, so you're a fan of giving the government rights not spelled out in the Constitution, huh? Why have a constitution at all? Why not just base the government's rights on a evanescent "social contract?"

No, I’m not a fan of that. I said ‘unemployment benefits by law’. That means being passed by congress and signed by the president, which have been elected according to the constituion. And then it has to stand up to federal court standards.
This isn’t about ‘giving rights’ to the government, they already have it in the constition to pass spending laws.

Ok fine, I was answering a question about where the government gets the ‘right’ to do this stuff. The answer I gave was completely correct. They get it from the constitution which derives from the social contract theory.
Two, if you think it’s illegal take it up in court. You’ll be laughed out, but that’s the only way to fight it.
The specific power is in Article 1 section 8:
The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;
To borrow money on the credit of the United States;
And how exactly did that happen when the French Revolution did not even start until 1789 - two years after the Constitution was written and one year after it was ratified?

You’re correct, I meant French revolutionary theory from before either war.
The Constitution of the United States is ALL ABOUT giving rights to the government. These rights are supposed to be specific and enumerated. Nowhere in this document is the right to take my money and give it to someone else because they're unemployed.
