Conservatives vs The Constitution, Make Up Your Minds
The Washington Monthly ^ | July 10, 2010 | Steve Benen

IF ONLY THE RIGHT WOULD LEAVE THE CONSTITUTION ALONE.... For the better part of the last couple of decades, conservatives took a fairly aggressive approach to constitutional amendments: they wanted several more.

Indeed, by the mid-point of his presidency, George W. Bush was on record supporting at least six different proposed amendments to the Constitution: (1) prohibiting flag burning; (2) victims' rights; (3) banning abortion; (4) requiring a balanced budget; (5) prohibiting same-sex marriage; and (6) allowing state-endorsed prayer in public schools. As a wise blogger noted at the time, Bush "really seems to think the Constitution is just a rough draft."

But that was several years ago, and the right's approach has shifted. Conservatives no longer prioritize adding new amendments to the Constitution; they now believe it's time to start repealing some of the old ones.

Libs change the Constitution with the bang of a gavel and they complain if a conservative comes up with an idea to use the actual constitutional process for amending the constitution that takes years and lots of support to accomplish.

And there's more to discuss on digg: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Conservatives_vs_The_Constitution_Make_Up_Your_Minds

By the way, have the libs ever noticed that there’s already an amendment to the Constitution that repeals a previous amendment to the Constitution?

Why should we? Libs don’t give a durn about the law and make it up as they go. I’m sick of playing fair while the other team cheats. Screw them.

Exactly, it better than how libs like to rule things via judicial insurgents.

This is why conservatives need to fight back using every tactic available to them.

Probably, but that's okay with them because they (the "Progressives" and FDR's New Dealers) were in charge of the process both when the repealed amendment was put in, and when it was repealed. Our latter day "Progressives" are fundamentally vulgar Nietzschians: they don't believe in morality and understand human relations only in terms of the will to power. Anything is fine and good in their eyes if they are in charge, anything is wrong and bad if they are not.

Passage of Constitutional Amendment to any effect championed by Bush or the Tea Party or even the RINO-laden RNC would make their heads explode with rage because it would fundamentally show they were not in charge, as their opponents could muster 2/3 majorities in both houses of Congress and majorities in 3/4 of the state legislatures.

‘Conservatives now believe it’s time to start repealing some of the old ones.’

The left would LOVE to repeal the 2nd Amendment, and use the judiciary system to place limits on the 1st.

Hypocrites.

But have no problem keeping the 16th.

See tagline.

Inconsistent article. The title is “Conservatives vs The Constitution, Make Up Your Minds”

And then it says

“Indeed, by the mid-point of his presidency, George W. Bush...”

W was not a conservative. It might as well have used Bill Clinton.

Does this liberal realize that Constitutional amendments are Constitutional? The process to do so is in the Constitution itself.

What Conservatives have a problem with is when laws are written that bypass the Constitution and Amendments or ignore them all together.

Really, what a FREAKING MORON. Thats the way you are SUPPOSED to do things, by adding/modifying things to the Constitution. It is very hard to do so, BY DESIGN. Thats the "conservative" way of doing it.

Liberals, on the other hand, use the courts in a devious and backhanded manner, to effect change, it is absolutely NOT the way it was intended.

Liberals are the stupidest group of people who think they are smart.

Broad stroke to say that conservatives support, first lie is saying bush and conservative in the same sentence. Some conservatives may support would be a better term. And I do think some should be removed.

I’m sorry — right off the bat, this is a false dichotomy, and I’m getting FED UP with FULL OF IT Libertarians who think they were crapped out of Jefferson’s butt and have all of the answers now that the Conservatives have done the yeomen’s work since the day’s Reagan and for DECADES before!

I am a Constitutional Conservative. Libertarians have an UNREALISTIC view of the DANGERS of the REAL world today. PERIOD. They desire isolation and neutrality. Our enemies WILL NOT PERMIT US that luxury. PERIOD. To acknowledge that is NOT unconstitutional — it’s COMMON SENSE. Ronald Reagan understood this. As he said, “the reality is we must find Peace through Strength.”

So, Libertarians, STOP trying to separate Conservatives from OUR Constituion. STOP trying your holier-than-thou “we decide what the Constitution means” games. WRONG. The Founders did that. And they DIDN’T compromise our Security to satisfy their craven cowardice, greed, ignorance, lack of principles or personal vices.

If Libertarians wish to side with Liberofascists like Obama in BLAMING America for the conflicts in the world, then they should be COUNTED as enemies of liberty, NOT as “Sons of Liberty.” To believe in Liberty, one must be WILLING to DEFEND it.

George Bush was NOT a Conservative! Libertarians using him as an example do so at their own peril.
