Poll: California governor's race in statistical tie

Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman find themselves tied in their race for California governor, but voters have grown increasingly disenchanted with both candidates, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Brown has support from 44 percent of likely voters, compared with 43 percent for Whitman, but the difference is well within the Field Poll's margin of error.

The poll shows 40 percent have an unfavorable impression of the state attorney general and former governor, up from 32 percent in January.

Since she won the primary, Whitman has released television ads that are playing continuously throughout the state, one promoting her general vision for California's future and another characterizing Brown's first tenure as governor in the 1970s and early 1980s as a failure.

Brown has yet to release any of his own advertisements, which has wounded the candidate, said the poll's director, Mark DiCamillo.

"You're watching TV, you're picking up messages that are positive for Whitman and negative for Brown," DiCamillo said. "His image rating could go down further if the advertising continues without any answer."

While Brown is doing no advertising of his own, independent groups aligned with unions have been airing anti-Whitman television commercials.

Whitman's image also suffered during a bruising Republican primary campaign, when she endured attacks from her former opponent, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

The Field Poll found that 42 percent of voters had an unfavorable impression of the former eBay CEO. That's up from 20 percent in January, when many voters had not yet formed an opinion of the former eBay CEO.

Whitman appears to have made inroads with ethnic voters and union members, key Democratic constituencies.

While Hispanics favor Brown over Whitman 50 percent to 39 percent, they usually back Democrats by a 3-to-1 ratio, DiCamillo said.

Can you imagine lining up to vote for Jerry Brown? What can these people be thinking?

“It’s a pity they can’t both lose”

She doesn’t even vote; she donated to Boxer (supposedly over ‘net sales tax); she “opposes” AZ SB 1070. And yet she’s tied with Moonbeam?

Surreal

One elementary question: how does one become “enchanted” with a Jerry Brown (or a Meg Whitman for that matter) in the first place?

What major difference is there between Whitman’s policies and Brown’s?

I guess the bottom line is this — Will any of their proposed policies turn California’s economy around ?

Ah yes, the historically inaccurate and heavy democrat leaning Field Poll of California. The (R) must be up by 5% in reality.

Same dimwits that voted for King Obama. We probably never get rid of the mentally ill.

"Will any of their proposed policies turn California’s economy around ?"

If you stipulate that their policies wil turn CA's economy round, it doesn't matter who wins because, by definition, only non-socialist policies will do it. With the propensity for modern politicians to say anything to get elected and then pursue their real aims once in power, the only factor on which we can judge them is past record.

Moonbeam - thanks and goodbye!
Meg - no good political record and a mixed commercial record.

On balance, it has to be Meg, but with a clothes pin on the nose!

Why am I seeing the words ‘eBay’ and ‘RINO’ link up in my mind’s eye?

I become enchanted with Meg when I realize that Jerry Brown could be our governor again!

As for the differences between them, basically, Meg is pro-business, for the death penalty, and presumably would not stall our good propositions like 187, which stopped welfare for illegal immigrants, and 8, which banned homosexual marriage. Our governors have tied these up in the courts. 187 in particular could have by now had a big impact on our financial problems.

So no, Meg is no knight in shining armor, but as usual, she is a lot better than the alternative.

The public seems to have this one pretty well pegged.

Neither Brown or Whitman are fit to lead this state.

Thanks my fellow Republicans. Five more years at a minimum before we can expect to see our state turned around.

Whitman? WTF were you thinking?

The sad part is that out cagop "leaders" actually went out and recruited these candidates (Arnie, Meg, Carly). Just think what could have happened if they took that money/effort and backed McClintock, DeVore, etc. With those scumbags in charge of the cagop, we will always lose no matter the outcome of the election.

I couldn’t agree more. The GOP is dead to me for precisely this reason. The leadership is in the tank for Leftists. It has been for quite some time.

Sorry to say, but with the heavily Socialist Assembly and Senate we have infesting Sacramento, either would have been slapped down without so much as a "by your leave". Where we REALLY need to put our efforts is to turn out the 120 doofuses that make the stupid-azz laws here.

Oh, wow! Remember that?

They gave the prime-time slots to Rudy, McCain, and Schwarzenegger (iirc).
They even had Abel (let’s raise taxes) Maldonado on the stage.

Sick bastards.
