I think Clinton confused Robert Byrd with Justice Hugo Black, who joined the Klan in 1920s Alabama in an (ultimately successful) attempt to get elected to the U.S. Senate (but resigned from the Klan soon afterwards). Byrd was not from a time or place in which joining the Klan was helpful, much less a prerequisite, for a political career. And Byrd was a Klan leader for years, being named first a Kleagle (recruiter) and later being given the honorific title of Exalted Cyclops.
Former President Bill Clinton... Speaking at Byrd's funeral in Charleston today... seemed to criticize newspaper eulogies that dwelled on Byrd's association with the Klan... Byrd joined the KKK in 1942 and was elected leader of his local chapter. Byrd later claimed to have become "disinterested" after about a year. Byrd vigorously opposed the integration of the military, and wrote in 1946 that the KKK was "needed today as never before."Clinton apologized for things we as a nation didn't do wrong, and has never apologized for (or even admitted) his various crime, infidelities, and baldfaced lies -- so it's no surprise that he didn't point out that Byrd never apologized for having belonged to the KKK. Funny that he never apologized. Gosh, it's almost as if he never resigned his membership. Thanks Sub-Driver.

A SOCIOPATH can justify any pathology, and defending the racism of Bobby Byrd came very easily.
But, now that we have the alternative media to “recall reality” the bigotry of Senator Byrd will be written in the history of the ages.
Both of my flags fly at full staff today, they will not be lowered for I have many friends by which such an action would be an insult. I value those friends more than the “contributions” of that man...stealing tax dollars for legacy in the state which re-elected him for longer than I have been alive. So in other words, Byrd was so driven to seek power that he compromised any principles he might have had and did something reprehensible? That is Clinton’s defense of the man?

The blacks have convinced themselves that even though the exact same people that were the racists controlling the Rat party before 1964 are running it now, they somehow aren’t the same people.
That was my first reaction... Especially because the DNC praises the man who did join as an ‘elder statesman’ - and a shining example of ‘democracy’ in action... It’s sickening, IMHO.
