My father was a member of the USS Phoenix' Marine detachment in WWII. The Sunday morning it was sunk, before the Belgrano was named as the USS Phoenix, I showed my Dad a picture of the ship sinking. He recognized the superstructure and said, that's the Phoenix, I was on it at Pearl Harbor.
That's the only time he fully described the desparate and grim fighting of that day.
