17 inmates were found shot to death in the aftermath of a prison riot in Mazatlan. When the riot was brought under control, firearms including an assault rifle were found.
Unconfirmed reports put all the dead as members of the Zetas drug gang. The Sinaloa drug cartel is very powerful in this area.
Mexico has been torn by the ongoing drug wars in which criminal cartels are fighting each other for the lucrative drug trade moving marijuana and cocaine north into the US.

True story.
In August 76 or 77, my wife and I rode the train from Mexicali to Mazatlan, for a tropical vacation. It was to be a 20 hour ride in Primero Class air oonditioned cars.
Well, an hour out of the station, the a/c failed. We traeled on for the rest of the journey in cars which had no windows that open, outside temp over 100F.
Finally in the middle of the night we snuck into Secundo Class cars, with windows that did open.
We met another couple and a woman traveling alone. They all came down with Montezumas revenge, requiring one woman to be hospitalized back in the states.

In the mid 1980s came the last trip to Mexico.
