BP eyes showdown with US govt on liability-BP source
Reuters ^ | June 9, 2010

"At some point a line has to be drawn," the source said....

Earlier on Wednesday, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told a Senate hearing he would ask BP to repay the salaries of any workers laid off because of the six-month moratorium on deepwater exploratory drilling imposed by the U.S. government after the spill....

There are a lot of pensioners in UK who are not too happy that The Obammunist wants to bankrupt BP.

Meanwhile the massive regulatory failure that caused the whole fiasco is ignored.

Why exactly was BP given the MMS waivers? Campaign cash bought them? Why was a risky well design, as the WSJ said, approved by MMS?

So I suspect it will all be coming out soon.

BP is not an American company, if Bammy does anything to take it over, he will just tick off the Brits even more. I was talking to a lady from Scotland on Facebook and she told me that US/UK relations are already strained from Bammy’s actions, all this would do is it would make them snap apart. Getting a nuclear power mad at you for no good reason is not a smart thing to do.

My dog goes nuts when a hose is discharging liquid too. She picks it up and shakes and chews the living daylights out of it. Then drags it all over the yard and abuses it some more.

Now she gets her own wye'd off the one I'm using.

At first I was wondering how BP was going to spin this, but all be damned. They are right. The administration shut down the oil rigs without any real issue to close them down. If I get in a car wreck and kill someone and then the government rules no one is allowed to drive...I shouldn’t be held responsible for their over-reaction.

You were saying ...

Let BP pay and not the American tax payer.

You bet! And that's the "conservative principle" involved in this fiasco with BP's drilling. It's their damage and no one else's.

There are too many FReepers here who want BP to "get away with murder" (so to speak) and only pay "pennies on the dollar" for what damage they have cause to the U.S. and the US Taxpayer.

You'll hear it by those who post that BP is "only responsible for $75 million" and they say that you can't make BP responsible for any more than that. That's just another way of saying that BP should only pay "pennies on the dollar" ... that's all.

For example, if they are limited to just $75 million and not the complete bill for the damage they've caused -- then if the entire bill is a mere $1 BILLION (unlikely to be that low, but just saying...) -- BP would only pay 7.5 cents for every dollar of damage they caused. The US Taxpayer would "pick up for BP" the remaining 92.5 cents for every dollar of damage that BP caused... hoo-boy! what a deal for the US Taxpayer ... LOL ...

More likely, though -- if the damage adds up to $10 BILLION -- then BP would only pay 3/4 of one penny for every dollar of damage that it caused. That would leave the American Taxpayer the bill of 99.25 cents for every dollar of BP's damage ... Yeeoooow! ... talk about the American Taxpayer "getting it in the shorts!"... that's ridiculous.

Can you imagine having some accident that you caused and you only paying 3/4 of one penny for your damage for every dollar of damage -- while you get the American taxpayer to "foot your bill" of the rest -- for 99.25 cents per dollar of damage that you caused in the accident?

That's exactly what some posters seem to want BP to do ... what a sweet deal for BP!!

Ya know, I’d like to root for these guys....usually I do root for business.

But in THIS case, I detest both gov’t AND BP. Mainly because BP was sucking up to Hussein. BP gave more money to the Kenyan Commie than they gave to ANY other candidate in 20 years.

Hussein hired away BP’s chief scientist for a top position in the Department of Energy.

BP was getting awards from Hussein’s Interior department and free passes on environmental studies, etc.

**BOTH** of them—Hussein’s regime AND British Petroleum were working together to take taxpayer’s money.

(Just like I will not feel sorry for the Big Pharmaceuticals when Hussein turns on them like a rabid wolf: they were meeting IN SECRET WITH HIM in March of 2009, cutting deals (not on CSPAN) in exchange for support of ObamaCare.)

Big business, contrary to popular belief, does NOT always stand for freedom and liberty—BP and Billy Tauzin’s pharma lobbying clients prove it.

So in this case, I hope they mutually destroy each other.

It's more like this scenario, instead of the one you mention. And this one happened right next to me last week... too... :-)

It's like you've got some company working on the freeway and they end up having some accident happen (in their work on the freeway) that causes a progressive collapse (a "sinkhole" to open up) in the freeway. All freeway traffic is stopped and no one is allowed to drive any more on that section of freeway.

That happened at I-44 and S. Lewis Ave, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A sinkhole opened up where a contractor had been doing some work on the area and a section of freeway collapsed into a big sinkhole. All traffic on I-44 was shut down (backed it up for miles). And the next day they told people to not count on driving on the freeway to get to work in the morning. All traffic was stopped ... and no traffic could go through there.

Of course the problem wasn't as big as BP's problem but it caused "all traffic" to be stopped as a result of it. And fortunately, they were able to get it going again in a day (but the news had originally said that it could be a week, a couple of weeks or even longer...).

The traffic was stopped, the contractor work was stopped and the main priority job at that time was fixing the problem so that everything could be started up again.

Oh... and by the way, the State of Oklahoma didn't wait for the "contractor" to fix the problem either. They got right in there and fixed the problem as fast as possible. I'm sure the "contractor" is going to be getting a big bill for that ... LOL ...

“Ken Salazar told a Senate hearing he would ask BP to repay the salaries of any workers laid off because of the six-month moratorium on deepwater exploratory drilling imposed by the U.S. government after the spill”

Maybe the salaries should be taken out of the budgets for the Federal Jerks that are imposing the “moratorium”.

I can't deny that there is a huge problem created by this spill, but I already see tons of evidence that there will be massive fraud involving claims being filed.

BP is responsible for quite a bit. But if the US government shuts down oil drilling in the gulf, on what basis is BP responsible for the salaries of the workers who lose their jobs? That's the issue raised today.

As to the liability limits, I don't see where that an issue since BP, like Exxon in the Valdez spill, hasn't invoked them. Since they haven't, and have stated they'll pay the damages, it's rather stupid, my opinion only, to make the accusation. They might change their mind. Those limitations are the law of the land, which they're entitled to invoke if they wish. And yes, plantiffs will get around them. I'd suggest the shrimpers hire John Edwards, he channels dead fish and birds.

You were saying ...

Since they haven't, and have stated they'll pay the damages, it's rather stupid, my opinion only, to make the accusation. They might change their mind.

The language they used in the past was what I call "weasel language" -- which is made to sound one way, but contains "weasel words" so they can claim it doesn't mean what you thought it meant ... LOL ...

BUT, there are already several FReeper articles around where BP is already backing away from what they said earlier and already "weaseling" a lot more on it now.

I read one article (in one of the news sites) where BP would not agree to paying the bills for what they owe, even when a US legislator (can't remember if it was a Senator or from the House) asked the CEO very specifically if they were going to do that as he said before.

So, I see them as already "backing away" from it right now. One particular "weasel word" that you'll find them using is that they will pay all "legitimate claims" -- of course what they don't say is that a claim that comes in past the $75 million (which is all they feel they have to pay) is not a "legitimate claim" ... doncha know ... LOL ...
