WASHINGTON — BP's runaway Deepwater Horizon well may be spewing what the company once-called its worst case scenario — 100,000 barrels a day, a member of the government panel told McClatchy Monday.

Leifer said that based on satellite data he's examined, the rate of flow from the well has been increasing over time, especially since BP's "top kill" effort failed last month to stanch the flow. The decision last week to sever the well's damaged riser pipe from the its blowout preventer in order to install a "top hat" containment device has increased the flow still more _ far more, Leifer said, than the 20 percent that BP and the Obama administration predicted.

What a waste. Gas prices are going up for sure.

Not to mention the massive mess that Obama hasn't done anything about.

AND the eleven men who died. After the first couple of days, nothing much has been said about them.

You're absolutely right. Thanks for the reminder.

I feel badly that I hadn't given them so much as a thought since it all happened.

Is there a functioning pressure sensor in the BOP? What does a plot of its values look like?

If there isn't one, one could be hooked up at one of those BOP ports used in the kill operation.

Interesting facts included in teh article:

" Allen said early Monday that BP had closed one of the four vents on the cap and would try to close the others to get more oil flowing to the containment vessel. However, Wells, the BP vice president, later in the day said that the company had changed its view about the need to close the vents.

At first glance, it seemed that closing the vents was necessary to maximize the amount of oil and gas that could be collected, but that didn’t prove to be the case, he said. Keeping some vents open gave the company more flexibility when it had to shut down temporarily during a storm, as it did during a thunderstorm Sunday, he said."

Watching the video is seems the "cap" is oscillating in it's height above the BOP as the spewage flow apparently surges.

100K barrels a day...frankly I doubt that number is accurate. Would seem like a simple calcuation, velocity through a whatever size pipe times a time period.

My sense is there is a bit of politics in this number.

If anything, 100,000 barrels a day shows how we NEED offshore drilling.

100K per day is 0.5% of total US daily demand - from one well! That’s a lot.

My guess is that some months after this is all over, people will sit down and take a calm look at all the numbers and report that most of what was reported during this crisis simply wasn’t true. That’s usually the way these things go.

My sense is there is a bit of politics in this number.

BP has to pay royalities on ALL the oil from that well, even the oil that’s not being collected. The bigger the number, the bigger the check.

Probably true or a least 50,000 per day, plus at least two more months of this as relief wells get drilled. The Gulf coastal areas of Louisiana, Alabama. Mississippi, Florida, are screwed to a fair thee well. Jobs gone, tourism shot, fisheries and oyster beds off limits for 5 years or more. I think beaches will be sort of OK. They are the easiest to keep cleaning up as tar balls appear and BP will pay for it anyways.
