Pelosi: Oil spill shows need to move ahead on 'moral issue' of energy reform By Walter Alarkon - 05/29/10 02:46 PM ET
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi used the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to press for changes to energy policy that would reduce carbon emissions and the country's dependence on foreign oil.
“When we see the environmental, economic, and cultural impact of the tragedy on the Gulf Coast, we know that we need a new energy policy," she said in a convocation address at Cornell University on Saturday.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that energy is a "moral issue" that affects national security, the economy, the environment and Americans' health.
"If you believe as I do that this planet is God’s creation, we have a moral obligation to care for it and pass it on to our future generations in a responsible way," she said.
Pelosi told the college graduates that they'll benefit from reforms to healthcare, education and the economy already passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama.
"In America, we not only have an economic reason, but an ethical responsibilty to create jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education and establishing a new energy policy," Pelosi said. "These are the pillars of our new prosperity to create jobs. These are our decisions in favor of the future."

Putin asks to call Russia and talks for 5 minutes. When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is one million dollars, so Putin writes him a check.
Next Queen Elizabeth calls England and talks for 30 minutes. When she is finished the devil informs her that the cost is 6 million dollars, so she writes him a check.
Finally George Bush gets his turn and talks for 4 hours. When he is finished the devil informs him that the cost is $5.00.
When Putin hears this he goes ballistic and asks the devil why Bush got to call the USA so cheaply.
The devil smiles and replies, "Since Obama took over, the country has gone to hell, so it's a local call."
