Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby didn't even have a gun Thursday when the suspects in the slaying of two West Memphis police officers jumped out of their minivan and began spraying bullets at him and his deputy chief.
"They got out shooting with what they had," Busby said Saturday from his home in Marion, hours after his release from the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.
"We got back in the car," Busby said. "Then all hell broke loose."
The ensuing gunbattle in the Walmart parking lot with Jerry R. Kane, 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his 16-year-old son, Joe Kane, left the two suspects dead, while Busby was shot in the shoulder and Deputy Chief W.A. Wren was hit three times in the abdomen.
Wounded and hunkered down in their unmarked sheriff's car, the two lawmen continued to receive fire until a state wildlife officer rammed the suspects' van.

Maybe you should read the entire article.
Excerpt:
Busby and Wren were the first law enforcement officers to encounter the minivan after a massive search.
"We were looking for them," said Busby, 73, who was unarmed because he had jumped in Wren's car to ride with him, leaving his weapon behind.
I’m not sure, but believe the #1 rule when you go looking for a gunfight with armed and dangerous shooters who have just shot to death two lawmen 90 minutes earlier is to ...
gee, I forgot.
Oh yeah: bring a gun.
Note to Dick Busby: try carring a gun. You ain’t in Mayberry.
The real hero in this incident was the Wildlife official, who rammed his state SUV into the side of the perp’s van. He probably saved more than one life by his courage...
Obama and the politicians sure want good people to get mad; don’t they?
He was trying for one of Obama’s new “courageous restraint” awards.
From the video I saw it didn’t appear that anyone from the van was shooting.
Plus they haven’t released any evidence against these two “suspects” who are conveniently dead.
//conspiracy theory off
There’s all kind of stories out on this one.

Top US Spy Chief Quits After Obama Orders 2 Americans Assassinated
An interesting Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) report prepared for Prime Minister Putin circulating in the Kremlin today states that Obamas top spy chief Admiral Dennis abruptly resigned on Friday after the US President ordered the immediate assassination of an anti-government dissident and his 16 year old son in the US State of Arkansas.
wow
The mere fact that you must resort to misrepresenting those of us who are critical of out-of-control LEOs illustrates that even you realize you don't have good defenses against our assertions.
Don’t feed the mouth-breathing trolls. lol

Left his weapon behind? Isn't that a bit like a paratrooper forgetting his parachute?
Maybe you should grow a humerus (funny bone).
;-/
I don't doubt for a minute that Obama is capable of trying to have threats to his power eliminated, but this story has got a problem. The vast majority of military personnel would never participate in opperations against the American public. The American military is made up by a vast majority of true patriots. Officers take an oath to protect the constitution not the president.
The article that you link to was most likely written by the same type of people who have written so many Hollywood movies that have portrayed our military in sinister ways. I know a lot of military personnel and nearly every one is person with true American values. They are much more of a threat to those who are trying to destroy our way of life that to the American public.
The Sheriff here was probably safer without his piece than with it. He's still around to talk about the event.
Myself, I think I'm safe in a firefight if and only if I have a Howitzer to work with.
“Left his weapon behind? Isn’t that a bit like a paratrooper forgetting his parachute?”
The Sheriffs job was not to be a gunfighter; his job was to be the incident commander. It would be like chiefs on our department coming to a big fire and pulling nozzles from the hands of firefighters.
None of us were there... It is very easy to judge the actions of others in hindsight. Although I appreciate and admire the courage of the Sheriff and understand that things are done differently in some parts of the country... where I live his job would have been to be the incident commander not one of the persons to approach the suspects’ vehicle. He doesn’t need a gun to be the incident commander.
Cops have no one but themselves to blame for cop-hatred.
Cops would rate higher in the eyes of the public if more of them were like the brave and focused state wildlife service officer who rammed the bad guys’ car, and less like the moron sheriff who leaped out of his car without his gun.
