Louisianans take oil cleanup in own hands as frustration mounts

"Our crews are out there laying the absorbent boom," he said, adding that he couldn't understand why BP and the Coast Guard weren't doing more to protect his coastal parish.

In neighboring Jefferson Parish an emergency manager commandeered all 40 boom-laying boats hired by BP which were sitting idly at Grand Isle as oil sloshed onto beaches.

Bloggers and callers to a radio talk show cheered the dramatic action late Saturday night, promising the official their votes if he sought elective office.

"Stop at any of the coffee shops here at Plaquemines Parish and people talk about the spill with disbelief," Nungesser said.

"Number one, you hear -- 'there is no plan to stop it'. Second, we keep hearing this oil could come ashore for a year or longer even if they do seal the well.

Note to FReepers: Don't confuse the post Hurricane Katrina actions of coastal Louisiana residences with those of NOLA residences.

This reminds me of the very funny youtube of the folks on the escalator.

If anyone can post the link, thanks.

In it a couple of people get stuck on an escalator and go increasingly nuts waiting for rescue - rather than just walking up a few steps.

Cleaning up a massive oil spill is of course more complex and expensive than walking up an escalator.

But it seems to me the locals and even individuals - I am talking about you Kevin Costner - are going to have to get on it. The government and BP will not. They have made that obvious. It has been 30 days.

Perhaps at some point down a long road BP will cap it somehow, but in the meantime the locals need to be putting out the booms and the sand bridges and the hay and running Costner’s machine and so forth.

The BP boats may have been sitting there because Bummer is dithering and won’t approve emergency oil blockage projects because he can’t tell if some rare lobster would be inconvenienced.

That incident was addressed in Landry’s press conference Sunday. They were the smaller skimmer boats that work for a slick, but are useless for handling congealed oil. That particular area is getting congealed chunks at the moment.
