The Republican Governors Association launched a new television ad yesterday with familiar complaints about Gov. Ted Strickland's handling of the economy and a zinger at the end: "His aides lied to investigators."
It was an apparent reference to the fact that Public Safety Director Cathy Collins-Taylor and others were accused in an Ohio inspector general's report of lying under oath about an aborted sting at the Governor's Residence in January.
Collins-Taylor insists that she didn't lie. But the ad started airing a day after a Republican-led Ohio Senate committee voted 5-4 to recommend against confirming Collins-Taylor.
Strickland previously had complained that the proceedings were political, and the governor's office went a step further yesterday.
"This ad makes it awfully clear that this week's confirmation hearings were politically motivated, and the conclusion was predetermined in order to set up a campaign ad," Strickland spokesman Keith Dailey said.
Republicans reject such suggestions, and they note that it is illegal for groups such as the Republican Governors Association to coordinate activities with a candidate's campaign.

Hopefully Obama's policies will drag Strickland under in the fall.
The RGA is as bad as the RNC when it comes to backing RINO’s, see Massachussetts for that
Strickland is pitiful,he is anti-coal to the extreme,I can’t wait till November!
Ohio can not afford 4 more years of Strickland. Our county here in SE Ohio is at 15.2%, it was about 6% when he came into office telling people he would create jobs.
Where are you...in Cincy??
No Southeast Ohio near Zanesville. It’s between Columbus and Wheeling,WV.
