April mass layoffs rise led by manufacturing (unemployment rate remained stubbornly high at 9.9 %)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The number of mass layoffs by U.S. employers rose in April led by manufacturers who shed workers even as the economy began to recover.

The Labor Department said the number of mass layoff events -- defined as job cuts involving at least 50 people from a single employer -- increased by 228 to 1,856 as employers shed 200,870 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The number of mass layoffs in the manufacturing sector totaled 448 resulting in 63,616 initial jobless benefit claims, the department said. That was more than 24,000 higher than the previous month, but well below the 125,000 initial jobless claims in the manufacturing sector a year ago.

The Labor Department said the manufacturing sector accounted for 23 percent of all mass layoffs and 28 percent of the initial claims filed in April.

The U.S. jobs market is lagging the broader economic recovery that started in the second half of 2009. Since December 2007, when the worst recession in 70 years started, the U.S. economy has shed more than 8 million jobs and the latest data suggest it will take some time to make up for those losses.

Monthly data suggest employers are beginning to add jobs, but the overall unemployment rate remained stubbornly high at 9.9 percent in April, up from 9.7 percent the previous month, as discouraged workers started to look for work again.

“...even as the economy began to recover”
You have to give the MSM credit.
They’re spunky little fellers.
Ever faithful, dedicated propagandists who just can’t let go of that chicken.

Hellloooo.

Obama is in office. I didn’t realize how many employers thought that Bush was still in office. If they knew it was Obama I am sure they would have kept all those people and maybe hired a few from the dummies who were laying off.

9.9% Who do they think they’re kidding with that figure?

482 thousand new jobless claims each month, very little hiring, and yet the figure just doesn’t go up.

Hogwash!

What gets me is that at my former job they just won’t let a manager go. 24K worker drones yes, but have to have those managers. They have the HR person doing the mail1

What is behind that kind of thinking?

No kidding, this drives me out of my damn mind. HEY! MSM! If the economy is shedding jobs like mad and the stock market is dropping 400 points in a day, THE ECONOMY IS NOT STARTING TO RECOVER. That’s like pointint to a leper’s foot that has rotted off and saying “Huh, imagine that, and he was starting to get better.”

That was my first thought. Since it applies to buisness that have 50 or more employees then #49-70 just got laid off.

Probably auto parts factories making parts for the glorified Government Motors cars which probably aren't selling. Probably those factories are getting out of the union controlled liberal democratic heavily taxed states, the people are getting their change. < /sarcasm>

So without the propaganda numbers generated because of the census workers, what is the unemployment rate?

My wife was a volunteer director at a local hospital. Some of her volunteers were hooked up by the local welfare office. Even if they volunteered very few hours per week, say 16 or so, they were still considered employed by the government.

We’re being jobbed, no doubt about it. I’ve also heard that if the government is paying for some sort of trade related schooling, you’re also considered employed. Not sure about that one, but it’s a pretty safe bet something like this is the case.

And then of course there is the census pumping up numbers..

They have every intention of making the US a 3rd world nation.. send the jobs to current 3rd world folks, let the illegals move in and settle and of course cut down on the use of power

Thus sets the stage for a socialistic society. This has not happened overnight, it has been a long range plan..moving right along under the latest socialist

This isn't good news.

Recessions start with a downturn in manufacturing and it's manufacturing that leads an economy out of one. It's true despite manufacturing's smaller role in the American economy and despite what the administration and the media tell you about housing and consumer spending.
