Senators press for National Guard troops on border

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Pentagon officials are at loggerheads over a plan to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, even as President Barack Obama is pledging to bolster security there.

The Guard stalemate has festered for nearly a year, and frustrated lawmakers are demanding action to stem the spread of violence and drug trafficking that has spilled across the border into their states. The inaction raises questions about whether the White House is convinced the federally funded deployment is necessary, or whether border states will be forced to bear the costs of dispatching the Guard troops on their own.

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama said the U.S. is committed to standing with Mexico against the drug cartels.

"As your partner, we'll give you the support you need to prevail," he said, adding that through increased law enforcement on the U.S. side of the border, "we're putting unprecedented pressure on those who traffic in drugs, guns and people."

or whether border states will be forced to bear the costs of dispatching the Guard troops on their own.

So, that's the issue at stake. Who will pay the bill?

We've been wondering why the governors didn't just send the National Guard troops to the border on their own initiative. Evidently, because they want Uncle Sam to pick up the tab.

Which isn't unreasonable, since the Federales are charged with defending the border against alien invaders.

How about if instead of NG troops, we bring home V Corp and give them as their new mission: “Secure the border!”

Secure the border is not a priority. Even when pols, that includes my own Gov Goodhair, say to secure the border first.

Priority is money and power for themselves. Pure and simple. Right now power is seen as ‘VOTES’ and there for securing the border can not be a priority.

I still believe that the Nation Guard belongs to the individual State Governors and there for they should order there duty station where they see fit.

We could return some of our active duty troops home and place them on the border also, to face-off with the banditos, etc who want to take pot shots across the border. Once fired upon returning fire to protect themselves would be in order.

Some Predators with Hellfires would be appropriate too.

We might want to ask the Obamaloon clown coalition to require that Guard troops have weapons.

(Note to liberals: Weapons are tools that are capable of causing harm to the objects which are being targeted. They are used by pointing at the object to which harm is intended, and the harm is instantiated by pulling a thing called a “trigger”.)

Of course the Federal Government should pay for securing our borders. It's their bleeding job for crying out loud!
If they had built the wall like they should have, we wouldn't be having this crap. The first thing 0bozo did when he took power last you, was to order the building of the wall STOPPED, in addition to he cut down on the number of border patrol officers. Clearly, this Marxist wants as many illegals here as possible so they can vote for him in 2012.

I still believe that the Nation Guard belongs to the individual State Governors and there for they should order there duty station where they see fit.

Many years ago before active military duty I belonged to the NY National Guard. I believe the Guard was under the jurisdiction of the Governor of the State. Only in an national emergency that the President of the United States could take command and activate the guard. Is it different now? Is the Guard now King Obama private army? Remember, the Guard can be activated for domestic reasons, not like the active military.

Do you remember 2006 when Bush sent the guard to the border in hopes that the GOP wouldn't lose the elections that November?

Didn't work.

Now, four years later, and the GOP is using the same issue of sending out the guard in hopes that it will help win the November elections.

You are correct.

In 2006 when Bush sent the guard to the border, many governors were opposed.

Well, yes, I remember that. It was an empty political gesture, because Bush always favored the illegal immigrants, unfortunately.

He sent the National Guard to the border, but as I remember, they were not armed, and were forbidden from doing anything.

There was one incident when some Mexican drug smugglers fired toward the National Guard, and they quickly retreated, as they had to—since they weren’t armed and were forbidden to shoot back.

That kind of thing was unlikely to get Bush any votes. Of course, Obozo is pretty certain to do the same thing. He won’t even let the troops in Afghanistan defend themselves properly.

"they were not armed"

Yes, prior to that, there had been some marines assigned to the border and they has shot and killed a US teenager who was out plinking.

Only in an national emergency that the President of the United States could take command and activate the guard.

When Eisenhower integrated Little Rock school, he first federalized the National Guard to prevent the Governor from using them.

Same thing would happen today if States begin flexing their 10th amendment rights.

Without bullets or authority, all they could do is sit and watch.
