US top scientists urge coal, oil use penalties (carbon tax on fossil fuels or emissions cap&trade)

WASHINGTON – Ditching its past cautious tone, the nation's top scientists urged the government Wednesday to take drastic action to raise the cost of using coal and oil to slow global warming.

The National Academy of Sciences specifically called for a carbon tax on fossil fuels or a cap-and-trade system for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, calling global warming an urgent threat.

The academy, which advises the government on scientific matters, said the nation needs to cut the pollution that causes global warming by about 57 percent to 83 percent by 2050. That's close to President Barack Obama's goal.

"We really need to get started right away. It's not opinion, it's what the science tells you," said Robert Fri, who chaired one of the three panels producing separate climate reports.

Robert Fri:

"He currently chairs a study to evaluate the nuclear energy research program at DOE. Fri received his B.A. in physics from Rice University and his M.B.A. from Harvard University, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.".

Gee, why does a physicist need and MBA? Must be seeing dollar signs in "science".

In one of three multi-hundred-page reports on climate change by the National Research Council, scientists said the United States should set a budget that would limit greenhouse gas emissions to a total of between 170 and 200 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent between 2012 and 2050. Maybe it's a better idea to let physical scientists worry about physical "sciency" stuff, and let the economist worry about economic, to especially include our nation's tax policies. Just a though.

People who study the weather, should take a BIG swig of STFU, when speaking about other topics.

They couldn’t care less about people struggling to pay for gas and getting to work every morning. What the hell do they think we’re going to use to commute to work? Nonexistent mass transportation? Bicycles? Perhaps they don’t think about it all. Perhaps people are that worthless to them.

These freaks only care about saving the Earth Goddess.

Is wish they would cut back on their own CO2 production by offing themselves.

Sounds more like a “political scientist” than a “real scientist”.

They don’t want to outlaw CO2. They are not quite as stupid as our politicians.

Not scientists... charlatans. And have these con artists cut back on their own use of fossil fuels?

If these idiots want to earn their keep why don’t they lobby for money to find a way for burning coal without the pollution. Wyoming and adjacent states have enough coal to supply our energy needs for decades.

Hell no. Why should they? If they get what they want, they and all their buddies, like Al Gore, will make billions and we’ll pay for it.

These a$$'s aren't scientists - they're astrologers!

Zero's own "wizard" (the man behind the Chicago Climate Exchange) said that if we shut down the entire power generation / grid and transportation systems - eliminate all economic activity - we would only get to a 65% reduction.

That's the goal - bring down the last super power and quasi-free market society.

The signers of that joke are “top scientists” just about as much as the Obamaloon is a “top lawyer”.

Such a smelly pile of Bull Obama I have not seen since - yesterday.

The hyper-politicization of so-called science is one of the most disillusioning things that has happened in my lifetime.

This classic article by Dr Bruce Charlton is the best explanation I’ve seen of what is going on:
