John Travolta's Dogs Killed In Airport Accident
CBS ^ | 05-18-2010 | ???

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) John Travolta's two family dogs were killed after being struck by an airport service vehicle at Maine's Bangor International Airport.

This event comes a little more than a year after Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, lost their son, Jett, who died after suffering from a seizure while vacationing with them in the Bahamas.

In a statement released to the Bangor Daily News, city officials said, "An airport service pickup truck was approaching the airplane to service the airplane and did not see the dogs. Unfortunately, the dogs were struck and killed. The airport is investigating the accident. Out of respect for the family's privacy the city will make no further comment."

The dogs may have been leashed in such a way as to not have mattered. I generally use a long, 35 ft recoil (flexi) leash when “pottying” my dogs after a long trip. It’s just more efficient as it gives the dogs the freedom to sniff.

OTOH, it’s real easy for a dog on a long-line to slip around a corner & get nailed by something.

I’m guessing that the service truck was approaching the plane & the dogs sort of popped out from around or beneath the plane.

The dogs should not have been running loose.

Very sad.

I agree, it was a stupid comparison.

“I’m calling this B.S.. I bet the dogs were loose and were chasing the truck as it arrived. If I am wrong and they were on a leash, the person walking them had no business being outside of the plane much less walking dogs around any kind of traffic. This happened at Bangor International Airport, not at the Bugtussel Crop Dusting Runway.”

You may not understand the circumstances. Travolta is a pilot and owns multiple aircraft. If his private aircraft was at Bangor International Airport, he was probably at Avitat Bangor. Avitat is the private Fixed Base Operation that services general aviation aircraft. Folks get out of the plane and walk into the building. There is no jetway. Vehicles drive to and from the aircraft to fuel it, load and unload baggage, service the lavatory, etc. Passengers can have their rental cars/limo/taxi drive to the aircraft, or they can walk through the FBO to the ground transportation. My point is the people do have business walking around that portion of the airport, including walking their dogs over to an area to relieve themselves.

I was at Ft. Lauderdale this weekend. On both the airside and the ground side of the FBO they had designated doggy doo doo areas, with little plastic bags and trash cans to clean up after little Foo Foo did his business.

I never cease to be amazed at how Freepers project things into stories that are not there.

Agreed. My sweet baby goes everywhere with me. If she can’t go, then I don’t go. The same can’t be said for hubby.

I’m sorry, but you are wrong about that. Our family has a service animal. As such, service animals are walked off the plane on leashes for potty breaks in the grass specifically designated for this use at airports.

Also, Delta Dash places crated dogs on the tarmac and their cutomers are warned to be sure to have their name and address attached to the dog, as well as the crate, due to the dogs sometimes escaping their crates and running lose on the tarmac. Airport personnel do know to watch for animals.

I hope not, but in the grand scheme of things, losing their dogs in this tragic accident can only intensify their feelings of loss regarding their son, Jett. And their young daughter must be suffering anew as well. It’s been a rough time for them and I wish them well.

I like Travolta. The scientology thing aside, he’s done a number of good movies, he mostly keeps his opinions to himself, and he’s really suffered a number of major losses in his life. I wish him well.

I have to agree. I didn't always like him, or his movies and I tried hard to continue that way, but he's won me over, movie-wise. Now if only he could put aside that scientology thing...

This is not the picture I have formed in my mind about how this accident happened. I know that Travolta is a private pilot with advanced expertise. Travolta essentially flies his own private jets — some of them quite large, commercial-size jets.

While this accident may have happened at a commercial airport, it may not have happened anywhere near the commercial terminals, but rather near a general aviation service ramp where private aircraft are fueled & serviced.

If I’m right, Travolta’s jet was parked & the ramp-door dropped before the service trucks arrived. People & dogs could have been debarked before anyone arrived.

A service dog may have had a chance at self-control in a strange airport environment, but most dogs are not that steady. If their handler’s attention lapsed it’s easy to see how a service truck could strike these dogs, leashed or not.

My $0.02

Freepers? Most of the Freepers comments on this thread have been very kind in regards to this famous heathen's dog loss. Speaking for myself, I don't usually have nice things to say about heathens or people who won't control their dogs.
