(Reuters) - Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps -- the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update.
"This is the highest share of the U.S. population on SNAP/food stamps," said the anti-hunger group Food Research and Action Center, using the new name for food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Research suggests that one in three eligible people are not receiving ... benefits."
Enrollment has set a record each month since reaching 31.78 million in December 2008. USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

The first of the month is the only time the grocery stores around where I live are very busy.... Sad.
I know of a welfare queen that gets over $600 per month in ‘Food Stamps’. It angers me to see how much she spends on drugs, smokes, and alcohol. She can afford that junk, yet WE have to pay for her food. In a way, the government is enabling her bad behavior. She also gets a TANIF(?) check from the state, with free gasoline every month. The fat bitch acts as if she’s ENTITLED to everything she gets!!! She also has a live in man friend that doesn’t have a job, and has no intention of getting one.(I believe he may sell drugs)
My nieghbors are getting rich off of Food Stamps.
They run a chain of take-and-bake pizza parlors. They accept Food Stamps.
Recession proof.
My wife sees the same thing: Packed stores on the first of the month.
Recently, she was behind the well-dressed and -coiffed lady who was buying organic produce and expensive cheese with Food Stamps.
Take out all the illegals and those who refuse to work and it’s probably around 1.2M.
I particularly enjoy seeing the welfare recipients sporting Ipods, cell phones, gold jewelry and cars buying soda, junk food, and hot food from the self-serve section rather than buying produce and staples such as rice, beans, mac & cheese, etc.
It makes my stomach turn.

I don't know what other freebies she is getting. Most likely free meals at school for the kids. All because she is too lazy to work and claims her muscles hurt.. It's a racket! I'm so sick of it all.
