A new Kentucky Poll shows novice political candidate Rand Paul with a commanding 12 point lead over Trey Grayson, the Republican Party establishments choice in the GOP race for U.S. Senate in Kentucky.
The states Democratic primary to replace U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning is closer, with Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo holding a 7 point lead over Attorney General Jack Conway, says the poll conducted on behalf of the Lexington Herald-Leader, WKYT in Lexington and WAVE in Louisville.
With less than two weeks to go before the May 18 election, Conway remains within striking distance of Mongiardo, who leads 39 percent to 32 percent a result that is within the polls plus or minus 4.5 percentage points margin of error. Another 17 percent remain undecided and 12 percent favor three lesser-known candidates in the race.
I wouldnt say its a lock by any stretch but I would rather be in Mongiardos situation than Conways, said Del Ali, president of Research 2000 in Olney, Md., who conducted the poll May 2-4. I think its a close race that could end up with the winner grabbing a victory margin of only 3 to 4 percentage points.
Among Republicans, Paul holds a 44 percent to 32 percent lead over Secretary of State Trey Grayson. Another 17 percent remain undecided and 7 percent favor three lesser-known candidates.
Its Pauls race to lose, pollster Ali said. Graysons best hope is for Paul to self-destruct.
The statewide telephone poll surveyed 500 Democratic and 500 Republicans who are likely to vote on May 18.

Mitch McConnell endorsed Greyson today.
DeMint endorsed Paul today.
Yesterday.
What? No general election polling? A PPP poll just released showed both Dems within the MoE of Paul and Grayson....that’s not good.
“A PPP poll just released showed both Dems within the MoE of Paul and Grayson....thats not good.”
Wow, a Dem poll showed Dems within the MOE of the Repub candidates, I’m shocked, not. I guess when you looked at the PPP polls on RCP you missed these two polls from Monday on the same race:
Paul + 9 against Conway and + 16 against Mongiardo, very good news, don’t you think?
Well, except MOST PPP polls are in line with others giving the Repubs solid leads, and you have to consider that Rasmussen has a *slight* GOP bias.
Wow, so you’re saying that PPP is MORE trustworthy than Rasmussen, one of the most accurate polls in the business, sorry, not buying it.
By the way, why do you say that Rasmussen has a bias, how do you know that?
Do you believe this poll?
I’m surprised Mongiardo leads Conway.
Not saying they’re biased, just saying they stand out from most all other pollsters in that they seem to give higher support to Republicans. I didn’t say PPP is more credible, either. If anything, PPP leans left.
