Writing for The Sun, he signals that the country he deeply loves needs a new government to pull it out of crisis.
Cowell, 50, talks of the need to inspire young people and unlock talent, promote family values, stimulate business and reduce knife crime.
He says: "I have always hated celebrities lecturing people on politics. So forgive me. But I am passionate about this country.
"I am equally passionate about the potential of the people who live here."
Cowell describes Labour's Gordon Brown as a "sincere man" but says the PM is "tired".
He warns of the dangers of a hung parliament and casts doubts on the Lib Dems and Nick Clegg, saying: "I worry about a lot of his policies."
And of Tory leader David Cameron, he says: "I like him, I trust him. He has substance and the stomach to navigate us through difficult times."
Cowell insists he is NOT telling anyone how to vote. But he calls the poll an "opportunity to bring back common sense" - and give people hope.
It came as support for the Lib Dems collapsed to just 24 per cent, with Conservatives in a commanding 35 per cent lead and Labour on 30 per cent.
Here, the man behind X Factor and Britain's Got Talent spells out why tomorrow's General Election is the country's opportunity for change.
BRITAIN'S got talent, enormous talent, that's very obvious.
I have had the great fortune of being able to see so much of it as I have toured the country for my TV shows over the past few years.
But I've also learned two other things on my travels.
One is that the majority of our wealth of talented people aren't being given the chance they need to grow and bloom at the moment.

Reduce knife crime? let the peasants pack heat.
Jeremy Clarkson for PM.
LOL, looks like they play the same poll games there as well. Show the libs winning in the polls and then, just before the election, release the real poll numbers so as not to lose credibility when the election results come out.
Amazing how in election after election the magic poll bounce occurs.
It'll take a cultural revolution (at the very least) to rid the West of this crap.
Damm; Simon hanging around that Kara chick might’ve knocked some sense into him.
Why’s he marrying a muzzie then??
Good to see the lib-dems crashing, Clegg is England’s Obama. Same shiftless and juvenile appeasement foreign policy tangled with a foolish domestic agenda. Seems like the voters are realizing it and abandoning ship.
Just hope Cameron can eek out enough votes to avoid a hung parliament.
That would be rather novel.
That would be awesome. Especially since he thinks global warming is a big fat lie.
When you think about it, American Idol is a very conservative concept, in that the winner is based on merit.
It would be really great, if we can add Great Britain as 51st state. That would be a huge economy provided we have one condition. Half of the social programs should be cut and youngsters cannot puke in the town centers
Isn’t he one of the staunchest conservatives in England?
I believe that to be an understatement.
If he is marrying a muzzie, he’ll have to become one himself first. Have you heard of any non-Muslim man married to a Muslim wife?
Cutting half the social programmes and the civil service staffs that go with them. That would be a tall order, but worth it.
I think he called it off.
It’s the government’s job to encourage entrepreneurialism and investment. Most importantly, it’s the government’s duty to inspire confidence.
“It should give hope to the younger generation to build on our wonderful heritage. It should inspire us to get out there and create and invent.
And then it should get right out of the way.”
My, what a pleasant surprise to read this comment from Cowell.
Disagree. American Idol winners are not chosen on merit. They win based on how many teeny-boppers think someone is cute and make the phone calls to vote. Talent is apparent in the final half dozen or so, but it’s the volume of phone calls that determines the winner.
He sounds like one on Top Gear. What I like about him is how he rails on global warming and the welfare state on the show. I can almost see the BBC brass cringe every time he goes off on socialism.
