Poll Shows Most in U.S. Want Overhaul of Immigration Laws

LOS ANGELES — The overwhelming majority of Americans think that the country’s immigration policies need to be seriously overhauled. And despite protests against Arizona’s stringent new immigration enforcement law, a slim majority of Americans support it, even though they say it may lead to racial profiling.

With the signing of the Arizona on April 23 and reports of renewed efforts in Washington to rethink immigration, there has been an uptick in the number of Americans who describe illegal immigration as a serious problem.

But the poll — conducted April 28 through May 2 with 1,079 adults, and with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all adults — suggests Americans remain deeply conflicted about what to do.

Actually the only overhaul to immigration we really need is to build a fence. Then everyone gets to come in through the front door ...

And leave the drugs at home.

There is a disastrous tendency toward new legislation - more laws - when things aren’t working right. What would help the most, is to enforce the laws that already address the problem.

Thank you. My immediate thought, too. Just wanted for someone else to point it out. :-)

I question the internals of this poll. The article doesn’t reveal much.

Yea but what KIND of overhaul? It means something entirely different when NYT says it.
How about simply enforcing the laws already on the books?
If at least one border state would start doing that - oh, wait!

We need to have an immigration policy that favors the US. I don’t care about “family unification,” where we bring in somebody’s ancient granny or auntie (look at Obama’s illegal aunt) and then support them in their old age. The children of these people can do what our grandparents and great-grandparents did: send money back to them and make their lives happy in their own countries.

We do NOT need any more Muslims, any more illiterate Africans, or any more crazed Middle Easterners who hate us. And they are all going to be LEGALIZED in droves under Bambi.

Obama doesn’t care about Latin Americans. He’s using them and he’s using people (like certain folks here) who hate them to sneak in his own agenda.

The time has come to figure out what America needs in an immigration program. It’s unworkable right now and something has to be done. Don’t let Bambi and the Dems take the initiative, because I fully believe that nobody here is going to like the result and it will probably destroy this country. What are any good, solid, non-hateful and workable ideas Freepers have?

Only Unions organize to do harm during "peaceful assembly"....SEIU has a great deal at stake - careful Americans who you lend your allegiance to when joining a UNION...Obama is no beginner when it comes to defeating the opposition....he plays dirty and always has...wonder who pulls his strings.....

LEGAL = GOOD
ILLEGAL = BAD
Why is that so difficult?

A NY Times and cBS poll of "adults" and not of 'likely voters' find a "slim majority"?

A majority of Americans, 57 percent, say the federal government should determine laws addressing illegal immigration. But 51 percent said the Arizona law is about right in tackling the problem, though 36 percent said it goes too far and 9 percent said it didn’t go far enough in tackling the problem.

Knowing the NY Slimes, that 9% is a separate group from the 51% so it is 60% in their spin poll. And since it is a NYT/cBS poll, add 5 to 10% to the figure for the people who want tougher and who support AZ's new law.

They need to be ENFORCED.

The only comment so far:

Like I trust a poll from the NY Times. They have been a propaganda outlet for the open-borders folks for years. I would like to see the questions they asked: "Do you condone arresting a six-year old crippled child just because she lacks a piece of paper?"

Even so, "a majority" supports enforcement. How about that.

A major overhaul of immigration law would be to stipulate that immigrants do not bring their culture with them but accept the culture of the host country.

Not happy with that? Then scram. We have enough diversity to kill whatever is left of America.
