Immigration Law Brings Call To Boycott Arizona Outcry has grown since governor signed tough immigration crackdown
BOB CHRISTIE
PHOENIX - Civil rights leaders are urging organizations to cancel their conventions in Arizona. Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks are encountering protesters on the road. And the AriZona iced tea company wants everyone to know that its drinks are made in New York.
Arizona is facing a backlash over its new law cracking down on illegal immigrants, with opponents pushing for a tourism boycott like the one that was used to punish the state 20 years ago over its refusal to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with a holiday.
"The goal is to as quickly as possible bring to a shocking stop the economy of Arizona," former state Sen. Alfredo Gutierrez said Friday as a coalition called Boycott Arizona announced its formation.
The outcry has grown steadily in the week since Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed the nation's toughest law against illegal immigration. The measure makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally, and directs local police to question people about their immigration status and demand to see their documents if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.
Many in Arizona support the law amid growing anger over the federal government's failure to secure the border. The state has become a major gateway for drug smuggling and human trafficking from Mexico.
Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling and other abuses, and they are giving Arizona a public relations beating over the issue.

The Major League Baseball players' union opposes the new law, issuing a statement Friday expressing concern it could have a negative impact on hundreds of ballplayers and their families. The union will consider taking "additional steps" if the law goes into effect this summer.
The cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles have talked of cutting off deals with the state and its businesses.
Phoenix is vying for the 2012 Republican National Convention, and at least one mayor has called on political leaders to choose a different city.
They’re making a lot of noise, but few are listening to them.
...hold the line AZ...don’t let them scare you...South Carolina went thru the same boycott b.s. 20 years ago over the Confederate flag...and it didn’t hurt them because after a month or so the aggrieved lost interest....same thing will happen here.
The MLB baseball might re-think their position when the rest of us write to them and tell them their weakness causes things like the shooting of the Deputy that happened today. Instead of supporting thugs and murderers they ought to think about supporting Americans.
The craziness of the left is so deep it is scary now.
The laws of our nation need to be enforced before being a citizen means nothing.
With so many kidnappings, among more serious crimes, being commited by illegal aliens, this might be some good advice until we here in Arizona can get the problem under control. Now the illegals have taken up shooting our ranchers and Sheriff’s Deputies for sport.
This is the best reason to get the convention.
I am tired of this topic. Go ahead, boycott, we will stop paying taxes to fund the anchor babies.
Why, are they all illegals? I going to AZ and I'm buying. They better hold the convention there also.
The majority must boycott any city, business, state, or group that boycotts Arizona.
Unemployment in AZ sould go down. It’ll be fun to watch the MSM spin that Americans are taking illegals jobs unfairly!
I live in AZ, so all I can say to each and every boycott-er, and illegal is “Good Riddens”. I didn’t like the smell of you anyway! (and that was a legal, economic reference, not a racial or bodily reference) LOL
“the AriZona iced tea company wants everyone to know that its drinks are made in New York.”
I’ll never buy a bottle of the stuff. How’s that for boycott?
Somewhere, somehow the backbone of this Nation has to be reconstructed, and Arizona has laid the foundation for it. Let’s all support Arizona, and join with Arizonians to support the stiffening of our National spine.
It’s best to pick a nationwide corporation that is based in the cities whose mayors are urging a boycott of Arizona.
Call them and say you are boycotting their stores or products unless they slap down these mayors. If it’s done from coast to coast, it will have an effect.

“Phoenix is vying for the 2012 Republican National Convention, and at least one mayor has called on political leaders to choose a different city.”
If the Republican Party leaders had any sense, they would immediately start planning to have the convention in AZ. It would energize the base and clearly separate itself from the Kenyan Marxist and his fellow travelers.
But notice I said IF the Republican Party leaders had any sense . . . .
Arizona will then cut off contracts for goods and services that boycotting cities and states have with Arizona...ha.
Go for it...and while we’re at it...Lets boycott Shakira, that mindless twit! hey, Shakira, go back to Columbia and straighten out your own drug cartell problems!
By who? 70% of the American public agrees with Arizona's new law.
No, the backlash is coming from a vocal minority who are being enabled by their cohorts who hold the reins of the major media in this country. This amplifies their voice out of all proportion.
Meanwhile, who speaks for the American majority, but us?
The RNC needs to choose which side they’re on!
As if one day holding a convention in Arizona will make up for the 30 plus years the Republican party, despite all its pandering to voters on the issue, has done nothing about it.
