Raising Arizona
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 4-28-10 | Tribue editorial staff

Utah should not copy bad law

We all recognize the image: A uniformed man pulls someone out of a line of people at a bus stop or orders someone walking along the street to stop. Then he holds out a hand and demands "Papers!" Some form of that scenario plays out in almost every movie about a police state where the law is at odds with human rights.

That's the kind of scene possible in Utah under Rep. Stephen Sandstrom's proposal to require immigrants to carry ID that proves they are living in Utah legally. It would require local officers to question anyone they believe is in the country without proper documentation. It would not require officers to show probable cause before demanding proof.

The usual scare-tactic rhetoric from this open borders editorial staff is getting old. In fact, police departments who have opted into the 287(g) program generaly turn arrested suspects over to I.C.E. without proper documents, as in Tulsa County, Arizona, rather than the storm trooper scenario described in this editorial. When the mass exodus of illegal aliens from Arizona spills outward, other states like Utah will need similar legislation. America’s Choice: Arizona or Amnesty

One would think that a paper in the capital city of a Mormon dominated state would not exist printing such drivel.

Each and every silly statement made in that editorial can be easily refuted.

What is it about newspapers that they hire only the lowest of the low?

What is is about journalism that draws people who couldn’t pass an elementary math or logic class?

Amen, I don’t even have to go to the article to know the mindset of 75 percent of those who will add their comments to the article. Whine, Whine, Whine, police state, freedom is no more, blah blah blah. Every one a Bush basher Still.

Oh please. The cops can already stop us while we walk down the sidewalk and demand ID.

Read the comments to the original article, they will really frost you as it will give you the reason the Tribune, in the middle of Mormon country, is will to print such as it does.

And of course we all remember how those millions of Jews were sneaking into Nazi Germany during the thirties, right? Oh wait, I remember now, they wanted to leave Germany. Never mind.

hey, illegals, here’s a clue.....for damn sure the papers you are carrying should NOT be the Salt Lake Tribune (since carrying a Dinosaur Media Dead Tree publication is a dead give-away that you have not been living in this country for the past ten years)

Generally, Tribune comments on this subject are resonable and well thought out, open borders nonsense getting the thumbs down. Not so far today...

I read the Trib fairly often, and I really have a problem understanding who the readers are, self excluded. The majority of comments I’ve seen regardless of subject leave me thinking these are liberal move ins, between the ages of 12 and 20, who don’t have a brain in their heads, or the anti mormon crowd who will guarantee you 27 pages of comments within 30 seconds of an article printed about the Mormon Church regardless of subject. Bush derangement and Mormon derangement Syndrome are pretty close cousins.

Mildly surprising from a Utah newspaper.....

Please folks, counter this crap with references to the
“Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act” (UCAPA)*

That is an (Sebelius endorsed) law (passed in 10 states now and more pending) that is an actual example of this sort of ‘papers please’ police state crap.

These folks want to have their cake and eat it to.

* Do a google search. I have written plenty on this horrible, draconian law.

Utah is overall a conservative state. Downtown Salt Lake, though, is rather liberal.

Well, as someone once said, most of us learn to write by the seventh grade or so, and then move on. Journalists however...

The funny part is they presume one needs to examine "papers" to form a reasonable suspicion that one is illegal. The last amnesty was in 1986. If the suspect is below the age of 42 and cannot speak passable English, chances are excellent that the fellow is as illegal as a kilo of cocaine.

There is simply no way a person could be younger than in their forties, and have been in this country legally, and not speak the language. Any young adult requiring a translator is presumptively illegally present in this country, papers or not.

“Any young adult requiring a translator is presumptively illegally present in this country, papers or not. “

Could be a tourist, of course.

Any young Spanish speaking adult without a visa who comes into contact with the police is presumptively illegal. After all, a tourist is supposed to be carrying documents proving him to be a tourist for just such occasions.

Happier?
