Jeb Bush speaks out against Ariz. law

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is speaking out against the new hard-line immigration law in Arizona, becoming the first prominent national Republican to do so.

"I think it creates unintended consequences," he said in a telephone interview with POLITICO Tuesday. "It's difficult for me to imagine how you're going to enforce this law. It places a significant burden on local law enforcement and you have civil liberties issues that are significant as well."

The measure, signed into law last Friday, would require police to check the immigration status of any individuals they reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants and arrest them if they can't prove legal status.

Bush said he understood the anger that prompted the bill, but that immigration should remain a federal issue.

There's more sympathy for illegals in FL because many of them were/are fleeing a rotten communist regime

Under the law Cuban immigrants are not illegal immigrants.

Jeb's wife is Hispanic.

That should explain a lot of it.

“The more I think about this, the more I realize that all of these politicians, Dem or Rep, are working from the assumption that the police and sheriffs are too stupid to put one pant leg on at a time.”

I’m working from the assumption that Law Enforcement is just like any other profession. There are the top of their field ones (a slim majority) the mostly competent “get it right most of the time” ones (the majority) and then the Barney Fife ones (another slim majority).
IMO this law gives LEOs the authority to divine who may or may not be worthy of further inspection based on some pretty vaugue criteria.

According to some we can do absolutely nothing to stop the invasion.

America, to them, is the most helpless nation on earth.

Don’t understand Jeb.
He is the better Bush politician.
He could have had the Senate seat.
He is a very moderate republican.
He was a very good governor.
But he hasn’t learned to read the public mood.
I’m just so very fed up with legacy politicians.
NO more kennedy’s, Bush’s, Clintons, Cuomo’s and please GOD, get rid of this current assclown.

No offense, Rubio is not knee-deep in what is going on in Arizona. He needs to stick to Florida at the moment.

And I, in turn, am working from the assumption that nearly all of the Republicans (RINOs) and DemocRATS want amnesty, despite the desires of the CITIZENS of the United States. The Republicans tried it and lost control of the house and Senate shortly after. Now, it's the dems' turn.

I called for a heavily armed border back when the pubbies were pushing amnesty and I still see that as the best route.

"Under the law Cuban immigrants are not illegal immigrants."

That's true. Once they set foot on Florida soil - the are legal..except for Elian Gonzales..where the Clinton administration decided on doing something else!!!

What I'm not sure of & would like an answer from anyone who knows - who passed that law?? Is it a Federal or State law?

“McCain would be against it too if he wasn’t up for reelection.”

He sure was dancing around the issue this morning on the radio. He would say that we need to seal the boarders first, but refused to say that he was actually for it.

Oh well. Good thing he isn’t governor of Arizona.

Frankly, I understand the concerns some legitimate opponents of the law voice. Problem is, they do not outweigh the need to stop the killings and lawlessness that is happening on the border, as attested to by the people of Arizona.

Does Jeb say Arizona cannot do it, or that he merely disagrees with it? I see he says it should be a federal job....and if the federal government WERE DOING THE JOB, then Arizona would not have passed the law.

I don’t care what your ethnic origin is, you ought to be able to see the wisdom of not letting anybody and everybody into the country anytime they feel like it. Our politicians should be looking out for the interests of our citizens, and not their own interest.

Immigration is the Bush family’s weak spot, I think.

If Jeb’s wife is hispanic, in my mind that should not make him ambivalent about illegal immigration. Obviously his wife immigrated legally, unless she was born here.

It’s not hispanic vs. white. It’s legal vs. illegal. We can’t let them make it about race. It is not about race.

What concerns??? If you're in this country ILLEGALLY, then you need to GTF out NOW!!

We taxpayers are sick of carrying you. It's bad enough that we have to carry the deadwood that makes up the base of the democRAT party without importing more freeloaders.

I won't even mention the enormous amount of crime that these people are committing.

I understand his concerns and even I have concerns with the police stopping people because they “look like illegals”.

Maybe if the feds would hae done their job to secure our borders this wouldn’t be happening. If I lived close to the border in AZ I would be scared to death.

Jeb Bush is speaking out against the new hard-line immigration law in Arizona,

Wouldn't expect anything different from the Bush family.

One of GW's regrets was that he couldn't get Amnesty for Illegals passed, not in 2002, nor in 2006, and not with two attempts in 2007.

Jeb Bush is speaking out against the new hard-line immigration law in Arizona,

Mark that and remember it, if/when Jeb makes sounds about running for the presidency.
