Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed. - Rasumussen

Where does this law say people can be pulled over based on their looks?
To: pillut48
"I do not want people here, there in Arizona, pulled over because you look like should be pulled over." If you look like you should be pulled over, then I don't want you pulled over.
Yeah, that's good sense.

Said Tancredo: "I do not want people here, there in Arizona, pulled over because you look like should be pulled over." Does the law actually authorize this, though?
Or is someone lying again?

Tancredo, you’ve just entered the dumb bastard territory.

I also. It is not difficult to see which ‘illegals’ might be illegal. I passed one today. He was Hispanic, I’ll grant you, but it was on the expressway going 55 in a work van with all the other traffic going 60-70.. I’ve noticed a lot of similar people always driving per posted limits/rules. I’ve always chalked it up to ‘staying cool’ like dopers on doobie....don’t give the man reason to pull you over....they stand out like sore thumbs...

Joke's on you, Tom.
Arizona's law merely mirrors the UNENFORCED federal law.
You do believe in enforcing the law, don't you Tom?

None of this would be an issue of the Federal Government actually did the ONE JOB it’s supposed to be doing above all others: providing for the common defense.

Mister Tancredo, ever the
lunatic and fool, goes for some cheap "ink" the McCain way.
Doesn't even rate a "nice try".

And this is how the great unraveling of support always happens -- always. Some Republican dumps on all the others -- too racist, unworkable, extreme, uncomfortable -- and then the avalanche of Republican critism takes off. The next step is that peoplebecome embarrassed to be associated with the issue.Have we ever seen Democrats do this? Not hardly. Stick to your guns, no matter what Tancredo or anyone else professes.
But hey, maybe Tancredo will get a nice editorial write up in the NYTimes now...

Arizona has a problem and they have every right to act on it, especially when the FedGov won't....
But this is a SLIPPERY SLOPE here folks...if this interpretation of the law is indeed true. Stay vigilant, please!

% of supporters don’t mean sh-t since we don’t live in a mobocracy. The fact remains that while I and nearly everyone else on this site support the intent of this law, there are also those of us who know that it will be thrown out in court for being in violation of existing civil rights law and legal precedent.

I don’t understand how a law that is already on the books has to have another law passed in order to enforce it and how enforcing a law that is in the Constitution can be called going too far.

This idiot hasn’t even read the bill. It merely enforces the current federal laws. You get caught by speeding, wreckless driving and can’t show ID etc and there’s attrition through employment. You can’t hire illegals! They’ll leave automatically.

Waiting to hear it straight from Tancredo's mouth/fingers I suspect that Tancredo has been taken out of context. This is entirely inconsistent with his stated position.
