McCain to Obama: Send troops to border if you don't like new immigration law
The Hill ^ | April 24, 2010 | Ian Swanson

President Barack Obama should dispatch National Guard troops to the border if he doesn’t like Arizona’s new immigration law, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Friday.

McCain, who endorsed the tough new Arizona law earlier this week, defended it as necessary because of the federal government’s inability to secure the border.

“If the president doesn’t like what the Arizona Legislature and governor may be doing, then I call on the president to immediately call for the dispatch of 3,000 National Guard troops to our border and mandate that 3,000 additional Border Patrol [officers] be sent to our border as well,” McCain said at a news conference Friday in downtown Phoenix, according to a report in the Arizona Republic.

[Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s] signature immediately set off a firestorm of criticism from Hispanic groups, who say the new law will infringe upon the civil liberties of people who are citizens of the United States or who are in the country legally.

Phoenix’s Democratic mayor has threatened to sue the state, and other groups are looking at economic boycotts of Arizona.

McCain has twice been involved in legislative efforts to boost border security while creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but has taken a hard turn this year and is talking almost exclusively about security.

The reason is the tough primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who on Friday criticized McCain in his own reaction to Brewer’s decision.

I’m not a big McCain fan. I don’t trust him at all. But if this ends up helping against illegal immigration, then it’s better than the status quo.

It’s just sad he needs someone else to have a spine before he’s willing to pretend he does.

"Hours before Brewer offered her signature, Obama criticized the effort as “misguided” and said it “threatened to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”

Obama is really a piece of work....do something to protect the nation and he calls it "misguided".

Obama the Union man and community organizer can't help but throw his country under the bus...........

If this development were to "provoke" Washington into taking substantive action on border control, it would be a good thing even if the Supreme Court were to strike down the Arizona bill as ultra vires for a state government. Unfortunately, even when we had a Republican president and GOP majorities on Capitol Hill, we never got near to that point.

Atop that, even if the borders were fenced impentrably, the problem of the 12 million (estimated) illegal aliens already here would remain...and it's as tough as nails. Even bringing the hammer down on their supposed employers might not do the trick, because of the extreme mobility of our population and the existence of numerous Mexican exclaves. If our Republic faces a problem that needs innovative thinking more than this one, I don't know of it.

The presence of vast numbers of illegal immigrants is what infringes on the civil liberties of people who are citizens of the United States.

“other groups are looking at economic boycotts of Arizona.”

A boycott would probably cost ‘em less than the illegals cost ‘em!

No troops anywhere else until they can be the dogs of war again. Besides, troops on Am soil is a dangerous and slippery slope. I have plenty of friends still active duty and drug detail is the most dangerous of all. McCain, no troops for you! Arizona can secure its own border.

You can always tell when “weathervane” McCain is up for re-election. He straps on a pair and struts around talking tough and trying to act like he cares about America. Not this time, RINO.

Bush sent the National Guard, but handcuffed the troops by not allowing them to do much more than play a support role. AFAIK, Bush never approved the hiring of the full number of Border Patrol agents that Congress approved in legislation.

Certainly, Obama hasn’t done so either.

It is to bad you only vote for Senator every six years. If it was every six months then Arizona would have a full time conservative senator instead of this transvestite posing as a conservative for six months just prior to his election bid.

McCain must be really, REALLY scared of Hayworth and the “Tea Party” voter sentiment. He is backpedaling faster than a Louisiana crawfish.

"Besides, troops on Am soil is a dangerous and slippery slope. I have plenty of friends still active duty and drug detail is the most dangerous of all. McCain, no troops for you! Arizona can secure its own border."

The obvious answer is to use the Arizona National Guard.

“President Barack Obama should dispatch National Guard troops to the border if he doesn’t like Arizona’s new immigration law, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Friday.”
Total BS and a temporary solution at best.
Build camps and station regulars there to patrol 24/7. Why, there are 80,000 of them in europe, alone.

Good old John is running to the right folks. Why didn’t he support building up security on the border prior to the last Presidential election?

At that time he was totally against that because it would discriminate against the illegals pouring across the border .

......the new law will infringe upon the civil liberties of people who are citizens of the United States .....

The new law will protect the civil liberties of US Citizens. The fear of Hispanics being stopped for the way they look is trivial to the rancher who was shot dead.

Let them demonstrate but take pictures and take names and addresses
