Cash for Appliances likely to draw crowds to stores in California

California's Cash for Appliances program appears to be off to a strong start, but the first big test for retailers is likely to occur today when weekend buyers are expected to hit stores in big numbers.

By early next week, consumers and appliance sellers will get their first clue on just how long California's rebate money is going to hold up.

"Anecdotally, retailers are experiencing more sales than they've seen in a long time," said Amy Morgan, a spokeswoman for the California Energy Commission, which designed the state's program and is now administering it. "We're already hearing things like it's Black Friday in April."

California's Cash for Appliances program is stoked with $35.2 million in federal stimulus funds. On Thursday, the state began offering consumers mail-in rebates to swap their old refrigerators, washers and air conditioners for more energy-efficient models.

Yep. Totally bankrupt federal and state government. Yet they STILL give away our kids’ and grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ money like penny candy. Damn them all.

To insult to injury, I can’t even get my share of the pie! We bought new appliances last year after all the 35 year old workhorses in the kitchen really started crapping out. With my luck, this new junk will crap out in about 7 years and there won’t be any free pie then.

The damned state is bankrupt, and this is what they consider a priority—paying people to throw away perfectly good appliances. I’ll retire to Bedlam.

I wonder how much of the increase in durable goods orders is due to these government “rebates” for appliances. Texas just had their Appliance Rebate Program.

From Bloomberg:

...orders for most durable goods climbed, indicating the U.S. economy sped up heading into the second quarter.

Unless someone needs a new major appliance why would they go out and buy (likely finance) one?

all say it’s horseshit, I just bought a new Freg yesterday at sears in Orange County, and I ask the guy if people were taking advantage of the “rebate” and the salesman said NO not in this store maybe else where but not here.

Most of the appliances these days are pieces of crap. Give me a dishwasher built just 10 years ago over any of the new crap out there.

It’s pretty easy to tell in the stores which items qualify. The retailers have marked them up heavily. If something seems like a fair deal, it probably won’t qualify.
